During NTEN's 2008 Non-profit Technology Conference a group of techies participated in several volunteer projects to bring technology to communities battered by the 2005 Katrina hurricane.

My group, comprised of consultants, non-profit workers, and Cisco Systems, traveled to a community center in St. Bernard Parrish to install wireless access points. St. Bernard Parrish was the hardest hit during the flood - only 6 houses were left standing out of 25,000 when the water rose 25 feet in 23 minutes.

It was an honor to be able to provide some help to this community and I'm grateful for the opportunity to talk with residents and keep the hope and momentum of positive work flowing.

I think we live in a fairly techy household... but, despite renewing one of our bathrooms over the Christmas holiday, we have not yet bothered to include a TV/computer screen in the bathroom.

This photo was from a hotel we stayed at in London. Did I appreciate it? Not really. Once we had got past the novelty and amusement factor - it saw very little use. When on holiday, we tend to use the internet less and watch almost no TV - instead we sight-see, walk and even... talk!!

Does the idea that you may one day be able to skype your friends from in the tub worry you? Or is it just the incentive you need to go on that diet? Either way, whilst this photo may not count as visually stunning, I hope it has increased your daily mirth quota, broadened your mind a little and might even inspire you to leave a comment! Enjoy.

From Stand-up to Start-up: Growing Girl Techies and Entrepreneurs

There aren't enough women techs and CEOs. University professor and entrepreneur Luz Cristal has observed how hard it is to get girls involved in science and technology. Many of her female students feel intimidated or insufficiently qualified to participate. Girls need to learn, even before they enter school and are shown what girls ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ do, so they can succeed in these fields. Luz Cristal believes we need to give girls the confidence to believe they can do anything; 3D-print an engine, create software, or start a company. She teaches girls to think like entrepreneurs—by anticipating needs, innovating, creating, and taking calculated risks. When girls are exposed to entrepreneurial thinking, a profound change takes

place; they learn to problem solve, think critically and creatively, and become more confident in their ability to tackle challenges.

We are at King's Hall, Stoke On Trent for to see Gordon Hendricks. He is the world reigning Elvis impersonator/tribute artist - something he does rather well. This show was to have been in December 2020... then April 2021 and now, finally, in December 2021.

Despite us both being triple jabbed, there is still some slight nervous anticipation over the whole COVID thing.
