JULY 13-15, 2015: ASPEN, COLORADO

Fortune Brainstorm TECH 2015

Presented in Association with Aspen Institute

“Technology-industry business conferences come and go. Fortune’s Brainstorm franchise, now in its 14th year, endures because of its unique blend of the power of Fortune 500 companies, the excitement of the emerging entrepreneurs of the tech world, and the connective tissue of the investors who finance them. It doesn’t hurt that Brainstorm Tech takes place on the gorgeous campus of the Aspen Institute in Colorado. It’s not the easiest place to get to, but Brainstorm Tech attendees tend to stick around, enjoy the tranquil surroundings, and have a helluva good time in Aspen while they’re at it.”

With three constituencies in mind—big-company CEOs, startups with juice, and financiers from every “asset class” from venture capitalist to private equity—this year’s participants include: Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly, President of the CVS pharmacy chain Helena Foulke, Flextronics CEO Mike McNamara, Apple’s top HR executive Denise Young Smith, Workday CEO Aneel Bhusri, and Ed Catmull, president of Pixar and Disney’s animation studios. Also attending are financers including private-equity pioneer Henry Kravis of KKR, Egon Durban of Silver Lake, and Reid Hoffman of Greylock; Startup founders and CEOs including Katia Beauchamp of Birchbox, Clara Shih of Hearsay Social, Apoorva Mehta of Instacart, Katrina Lake of StitchFix, Ben Kaufman of Quirky, Brian Sharples of HomeAway and Ben Silbermann of Pinterest. Joining them in the lineup are Stewart Butterfield of Slack, brotherly leaders of Stripe John and Patrick Collison, and Evan Williams, CEO of Medium. We’ll also hear from music-industry stalwarts Scooter Braun of SB Projects and Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Label Group. Lastly, we’ll hear two special voices from government, ex-Google executive Megan Smith, now chief technology officer of the United States; and Rahm Emanuel, the recently re-elected mayor of Chicago, a global city whose tech scene is emergent

very preliminary... I've been slowly adding to this, needed to do *something* creative today..... this started out just as a map of some technology trends I research and talk about (see techtrendsineducation.wikispaces.com/ and treglia.wikispaces.com/)....

but then I started think, hmmmm, well what about the roads above the subway? I'm interested in more than just technology (contrary to what some people would believe lol).... and when I started adding some interests on my "map" I realized that the "See One, Do One, Teach One, Share One" graphic I had made kinda goes very nicely....

going to keep working on this one, eventually I'd like to add this or something like it to the visual cv I started working on (www.flickr.com/photos/krillion/16268033555/)...

This painting is a mix media on a Taktee (a wooden panel) depicting the hypocrisy of divide of human civilization in the name of politics of nihilism, sadly it is in the possession of Mr.Saleem Asmi (Ex. Editor DAWN) who allegedly bought it, with the connivance of the main organizers of the convention of PIPFPD, held here in Karachi in December 2003 at a local hotel, with out my consent as the work was on display only and not for sale.

THIS PAINTING WAS RETURNED BY MR.SALEEM ASMI TO DR.HAROON TO BE DELIVERED TO ME ( THE RIGHTFUL OWNER OF THE PAINTING THE ARTIST ) on 25th FEB. 2012.....Thank you Asmi Sb .

Technology & Innovation Task Force

Before going to Trent University (from which I obtained my Honours Chemistry B.Sc.) I attended here (and got my Chemical Engineering Technology diploma). A good school, and I liked how down-to-earth, no-B.S. my fellow students were, driven by a desire to get a good job, rather than filled with silly pie-in-the-sky idealism about changing the world (unlike all too many university students, like those I met at the two universities I've attended).

I had the pleasure of attending a panel at the Commonwealth Club of SF last Tuesday entitled "Nanotech: Hype or Reality?" The participants were Joe Stetter of SRI, Mark Abumeri of Knobbe Martens, Paolo Gargini of Intel, Ron Mosso of NanoGram, and Warren Packard of Draper Fisher Jurvetson.

For a gathering of lawyers, scientists, and a VC, it was a very lively discussion, with topics ranging from implantable nanobatteries for internal defibrillators to the future of Moore's Law.

Despite the title of the panel, there was no question that nanotech is reality (with a healthy dose of hype mixed in, of course). The safety of nanotech materials was a topic of discussion, however, with the consensus being that the biggest concern is at the point of manufacture, for nanomaterials are easier to keep an eye on once incorporated into larger structures (e.g., nanopants).

An audience member asked what it would take for Silicon Valley to become Nanotech Valley. The panel's response was that nanotech isn't an industry but rather a group of technologies and materials involving very, very, very small things. Silicon Valley is named for the electronics industry that is based on the silicon of the transistor and the microprocessor. In contrast, nanotech is a technology that transcends many industries: biomedical, transportation, energy, communication, and even the silicon industry itself.
