I’m Kara Swisher, and also you’re listening to “Sway.” You understand how principally in each spy film, there’s a scene place the hero retreats to an underground lair, and the nerdy scientist exhibits off their newest gadget, like a flute that turns right into a rifle or exploding gum.

My visitor as we speak is that scientist. Daybreak Meyerriecks is the CIA’s prime technologist. In case you watch the Bond films, she’s principally the top of the Q Department. Meyerriecks oversees the CIA’s secretive Directorate of Science and Know-how, often known as DS&T. Her division makes the disguises and instruments each intel officer must spy for America’s pursuits. However, wigs and pretend mustaches can solely get you thus far nowadays. Synthetic intelligence and facial recognition make it virtually inconceivable for a case officer to maneuver around unnoticed. And virtually everybody leaves a digital footprint now. So how is Meyerriecks ensuring our spy gear outpaces China’s? How is the CIA working with personal firms to guard U.S. pursuits? And why the heck hasn’t the CIA recruited me but? Daybreak Meyerriecks, welcome to “Sway.”

Saul Shapiro was a materials engineer and a broadcast technologist before he opened his own leather, plastic and vinyl restoration franchise business with Fibrenew. Shapiro’s story is unique because while most of his fellow franchisees operate their businesses from vans and trucks, Saul’s mode of transportation for his on-site service business is a bicycle and trailer. In this 3:40 video, we follow Saul on his bike to a leather repair job in a customer’s home on Manhattan’s upper west side.
