Book launch: J E Castro, B. Fowler and L. Gomes (Eds.), Time, Science and the Critique of Technological Reason. Essays in Honour of Hermínio Martins, Palgrave, 2018.

Video of the book launch held at the Latin American Centre, St Antony’s College, Oxford University, 4 May 2018.

Hermínio Martins (1934-2015) was a fellow at the Latin American Centre, St Antony’s College, Oxford University since his appointment in 1971 until his retirement in 2001. This festschrift commemorates Martins legacy, introducing his wide-ranging contributions to the social sciences. These encompass seminal works in the fields of philosophy and social theory, historical and political sociology, studies of science and technology, and Luso-Brazilian studies, among others.

Speaker(s)

The book was introduced by the editors, José Esteban Castro (CONICET, Argentina – Newcastle University, Emeritus), Bridget Fowler (University of Glasgow) and Luis Gomes (University of Glasgow). Martins’ widow, Margaret, and several co-authors, colleagues, and relatives of Martins will participate: Stephen Mennell (University College Dublin), William Outhwaite (Newcastle University, Emeritus), Charles Turner (University of Warwick), Richard Kilminster (University of Leeds), Peter Ells (Oxford), among others.

A complete description of the book and the authors, including four book reviews, is available at: www.palgrave.com/gb/book/9783319715186#aboutBook.

Our innovative and technological breakthrough 'MOUNTAIN Red Gum' has been awarded as one of the highest scoring malt expressions in Australia.

Created using our advanced maturation technology, MOUNTAIN Red Gum is not a classical whisky by definition, but it utilises 100% malted barley, distilled in the Macedon Ranges and captures the flavours of The Australian native Red Gum as the only wood influence in the maturation process, creating a distinctly Australian profile.

Our Red Gum has been described as herbaceous, spicy and smokey with aromas of caramel, burnt wood and hedgerow. Peat comes through well on the palate and is balanced by flavours of dark chocolate, prunes, spice and pear, brightened by a hint of citrus.

Our ageing process at MOUNTAIN is extremely unique and follows years of research and trials including molecular testing at Monash University. This innovative production method is designed to accelerate the ageing effect that would naturally occur in barrel maturation. We are able to achieve in a fraction of the time what would otherwise happen over a period of 3 years or more. We aim to reproduce some of the natural atmospheric and seasonal changes of barrel ageing to impact the molecular journey of our spirit. This allows us to take on the complex aromas and flavours of aged spirits much faster than traditional methods.

Why have we created this process? Well, one very good reason for us to pursue this path is to unlock the flavours of native woods in Australia for use in spirit maturation. Traditionally, oak has been used almost exclusively for storage and transport of spirits and consequently, spirit ageing for centuries. This is mainly due to the fact that oak is fast growing and readily available. It also has the right properties and flexibility to be coopered into barrels.

For these reasons, other wood species have been previously impractical or out of reach due to their inability to be coopered into traditional barrels without cracking or splitting, therefore putting the precious liquid inside at risk of ullage or total loss.

Our novel technique does not use traditional barrels and allows us to experiment with multiple wood species. So we hope you look forward to seeing some exceptionally interesting varieties of native wood inspired spirits from us in the years to come.

The United States is always in flux. In a sense, change is its defining quality and recent demographic movements and technological developments are transforming all aspects of cultural expression and reshaping social and creative interactions. New writing in new voices is suggesting new directions.

This session will examine the impact of these transformations on American experience and analysis. Are these new voices assuming greater significance? To what extent are novelists, poets, dramatists and those involved in the growing field of non-fictional prose engaged in a dialogue about American identity, or has that conversation moved elsewhere? Questions linger as to why and in what direction the United States is

moving and whether contemporary work produced by Americans retains what might be called distinctly "American" characteristics.

In addition, forms of writing, publishing and book-selling are themselves being transformed. We note the gradual disappearance of bookstores and the power of online sales, the emergence of the graphic novel, blogs which develop into books, and self-published works appearing on literary prize lists. What is the impact of these changes on literary expression and cultural liveliness in America today? Are books on paper a dying technology?

We will examine new and established writers, listen to their literary and cultural voices and try to determine where America might be headed. To do so we invite a mix of the academic and the practitioner interested in contemporary aspects of creative American writing.

I dismantled my dad's computer to extract a dodgy hard drive. Turned out he didn't need it to be taken out to I had to then put it back in. In the midst of the pointlessness, I took a photo to make it somewhat worthwhile.

The National STEM Guitar Project, in partnership with NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Centers with funding provided through a grant from The National Science Foundation (#1304405), hosts innovative Guitar Building Institutes around the United States. The 5-day institutes, combined with additional instructional activities comprising 80 hours, provide faculty training on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for middle, high school, and post-secondary faculty. The institutes present and teach participants hands-on, applied learning techniques to help engage students and spark excitement for learning STEM subject matter.

Nationwide, there are increasing concerns from businesses about the supply of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics trained workers. Science and math test scores in the U.S. are among the lowest around the world.

The goal and objective of the STEM Guitar Building Institutes is to showcase a new way to present learning for students with applied methods.
