and nachosan had a post that mentioned texturing so I threw in a layer of that too.
Adjustments/Techniques:
- Blemish removal with Spot / Healing brush tool
- Brighten and saturate eyes with Dodge and Sponge tool.
-Desaturate some parts of face (eye socket) with Sponge tool (set to desaturate)
- Center Vignette with Curves layer and gradient layer mask
- Soften skin with gaussian blur layer and mask to cutout eyes, nose, lips, and some hair.

Platform fishing is a technique for catching salmon on the Columbia River used by the Natives that have been passed down for generations. During the low water season, platforms are constructed extending down towards the optimal fishing spots. They are used when the water is high and the salmon are returning. The fisherman would use dipnets- fishing nets attached to poles- or hoopnets- nets held open by large circular hoops, to swoop down and snag fish below the platforms. The poles may themselves be up to 7.6m long. Celilo Falls was a famed fishing spot, with hundreds of Natives from dozens of tribes fishing from dozens of fishing platforms while the salmon tried to jump the cascades. This technique was far more common when the Columbia River remained a deep and wild body of water, but with its extensive damming simpler methods are replacing platform fishing.

What is in this photo? (What are we looking at?)
This photo is of three people walking down a long hallway, towards a room with large windows at the end of the hall. The photo was taken at an angle so the end of the hallway is on the right side of the photo. From the bottom-left corner of the screen to the end of the hall, there is a glass railing that crosses the image. Despite the windows at the end of the hall, the photo is quite dark with reflections of light touching the ceiling and floor. There are unlit pot lights on the ceiling as well as skylights that run down the hall on either side of the pot lights.
What are the technical aspects of this photo that add to its characteristics? (How was it shot?)
- shot in manual mode
- standard 1/60 sec shutter speed and an f/6.3 aperture that lets just enough light in to emphasize the windows but keep the subjects as silhouettes
- aperture also creates a long depth of field (allowing us to see the entire hallway)
- my ISO was set at 560 which is fairly low so it doesn't allow much noise in the photo (it keeps it clear and crisp because the lower the number, the less sensitive the camera is to light and the finer the grain)
What is the dominant compositional element, and how does it work?
The dominant compositional element in this photo is leading lines. This is shown with the structure of the ceiling and how all the lines lead to one point/the end of the hall (also the railing, bricks in the walls, and floor exhibits leading lines). It guides your eye like reading a book (left to right flowing lines)
- also rule of thirds is present
What does it all mean?
To me this photo represents the future/the passing of time. The three subjects are all at different stages in their life (from left to right: a teenager, a senior, and a middle aged woman) although they are at different stages of life, they are all walking down the same path. They are all walking in the same direction; forwards. They are walking together towards the light at the end of the hall which can be interpreted as them taking steps through life towards the future, although it is unclear what it may hold from this angle.
Why do you like it?
I like this photo because it's of my family. This photo, although it's kind of mysterious-looking, makes me very happy to look at because we had so much fun together that day and this photo really brings back some positive memories from then. When trying to chose a POTY I kept coming back to this image. I was drawn to it (the composition, associated memories, and meaning behind it) and that's why I selected it.

I am cleaning out my Aperture database, and tripped across this macro that I never processed and/or uploaded. So, here it is.

I recently purchased four of the Echo Base kit at 40% off (minifigs, weapons, tauntauns, and a few other parts are in my Bricklink store - tell me I sent you and I'll give you 5% off). Once I started looking at the parts I'm keeping out of these, I realized I had a decent start for some mecha (even though I've never tried building in that genre before). Here are the resulting ideas. Most of these aren't great, but maybe some of the techniques are useful to someone else.
Also, more macro-mode photography practice. Just how many lights am I supposed to need to make these look good? These were taken with two focused lights overhead and another behind me.

Azulejos were used in large quantities to cover walls from the late 15th to early 16th century. A fine collection of 16th-century Hispano-Moorish azulejos (azulejos Hispano-mouriscos) can be found in the Museu da Reinha D. Leonor in Beja, Portugal (the former Convento da Conceição).
After the Portuguese had captured Ceuta (North Africa) in 1415 they became acquainted with the azulejo technique themselves. But until the mid-16th century the Portuguese continued to rely on foreign imports—mostly from Spain, but also on a smaller scale from Antwerp (Flanders) (such as the two panels by Jan Bogaerts in the Paço Ducal, Vila Viçosa, Alentejo) and Italy (such as the Annunciation by Francisco Niculoso in Évora, and Orazio Fontana).
