It wasn't all plain sailing. There's loads of technical content to this race so don't be under any illusion this is an easy race.

Here's my first official astrophotography effort with my new (to me) telescope. I've wanted a DSLR compatible scope for years so seeing this image is extremely satisfying. For the nerds interested in all the techy details: Meade ETX-90 coupled with Canon 5D MK III at prime focus (focal length: 1250mm / focal ratio: 13.8) 1250 ISO, 1/160 sec.

I loved how the shadows fell from the glance fence behind me and seemed to almost circulate the bench. The bench was interesting in itself, but I believe the lines created by the shdows really emphasise the waves in the bench and make it feel more.

I dressed up to promote the film. I then went over-board with the photos.

... nothing exciting, but just in case you fellow non-techies ever wondered what it looks like inside an average computer (had to have my sound card changed the other day and couldn't resist making a photo of the freshly-vacuumed inside). I find it amazing - wonder what happens right now in there while I'm typing this. Not soooo long ago (relatively) a simple nib and an inkpot were enough to write.

In ALL SIZES it looks like one big sort of Kafkaesque factory. If you imagine tiny humans moving along the various storeys. Well ... you know.

It's an amazingly non-techy experience. There are 15 crew members;

about 12 of them on the ground push it and then chase it, pulling on

the ropes. It is moored into a cone at the top of a mast planted

firmly onto a truck that is temporarily pinned to the ground. just

before we took off, crew members tossed 10-pound bags of ballast into

a compartment below us.

Techy note: The $250 Canon s100 camera used for the balloon photography has GPS capabilities. However we found that the GPS satellite connection drained battery power too fast for longer excursions over water (eg +/- 45 minutes).

We disabled the GPS capabilities in favor of longer flight times (1.5 hours) so that we didn't have to go through the precarious operation of lowering a bouncy red balloon while on Gowanus Dredger's canoes. GPS locations for the 15 December S100 photos are being added manually.

I am still playing around with the processing of my HDR images. NOW, this is more my speed. And if you ask me, this is almost Heaven.

I love it up here, the silence, solitude, and these grand views. You are above all of the hustle and bustle just you and the earth.
