Paula Sher’s image of the Ballet Tech advertisement shows a man in a ballet pose using a variety of elements. If you look from his left foot tracing upward all the way up to his ear, you can see a curved line that his body forms. There are also black lines that seem to form a rectangular shape around the words and separate them from the image, connecting from one rectangle to another in order that it needs to be read. The rectangles make it easier to read, by standing out, rather than words jumbled or scattered around the man’s body. The value of the piece, between the darkness of the black and the lighter shades, emphasize the muscles in the man’s body. The angle of the man’s body form an angular path, somewhat of an open obtuse triangle which can be observed as an open shape as well as an angle of the implied line. The texture of his legs shows all of the detail in his legs as well as his arms. The texture not only shows that this image may be a live person, but that it was not a flat image to begin with. The color of the image shows red at the top of his body, which can symbolize strength that fits perfect into his facial expression of him bursting out. I chose this image because the piece shows passion between the colors chosen as well as the facial expression carrying out that emotion of a person who does ballet. It’s a simple image, yet it says a lot just by the body language and two simple colors and shades.
