NOVO SELO, Bulgaria — U.S. and Bulgarian military personnel joined together for two symbolic ceremonies Sept. 27 and 28 as exercise Lion Strike came to an end.
First, Joint Task Force-East celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a humanitarian project at a kindergarten in Mokren, Bulgaria. Eleven U.S. Navy personnel from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40, otherwise known as SeaBees, finished an extensive renovation of the school during the exercise.
The children from the school, along with parents, teachers, school director, local officials and U.S. and Bulgarian military personnel, crowded the small courtyard during the ceremony.
"We say in the United States that the children are our future," said Army Lt. Col. Bruce Sones, commanding officer for JTF-E "Lion Strike".
"We hope through the efforts of those involved in this project that the improved environment created for teaching the children will contribute to the children's development as they grow and become leaders in your society."
The school director, Margarita Nicolova, thanked the SeaBees and then presented them with a picture painted by the children, a CD of Bulgarian folk music, a photo of the children and a glass vial filled with Bulgarian soil.
Of the soil, she said, "Wherever you go, you know you'll have a piece of Bulgaria with you."
The school children then sang several songs for the audience and the ribbon was cut. But, there was another surprise for the children, a HMMWV full of gifts. All of the soldiers, sailors and airmen participating in the exercise had contributed money to buy much-needed school supplies and educational toys for the school.
"We will maintain what you have done, and promise to continue with improvements," said Emil Enchev, mayor of Mokren. "Hopefully we will continue working together in the future."
The next day, all JTF-E "Lion Strike" participants, both U.S. and Bulgarian, came together again, this time to commemorate the end of the exercise during the closing ceremony.
During the ceremony Sones and Col. Biser Kalinov, chief of Training, Bulgarian Land Forces, presented certificates of achievement to 14 U.S. Soldiers and 16 Bulgarian soldiers for their efforts during the exercise.
"During this training, we had the opportunity to gain military experience from the leading force in NATO - the United States Military, and to show that while representing a small army, the Bulgarian officers, Non-commissioned officers and soldiers are honorable partners and excellent professionals," said Kalinov, who spoke first during the ceremony.
He was followed by Sones, who echoed Kalinov's feelings.
"This closing ceremony does not mark the end of a training opportunity or a farewell to relationships fostered," said Sones.
"In our minds, it marks the hopeful commencement of future training opportunities to be conducted between our nations."
"We can truly say the professionalism and generosity of the Bulgarian Land Forces is unrivaled," he continued.
"We know the strong relationship between the United States and Bulgaria, as demonstrated during this exercise, will continue to grow, and we look forward to training and serving with you in the years to come."
GRAFENWOEHR, Germany. – 28 March: The field begins to narrow as participants from across the U.S. military, as well as Soldiers from NATO countries begin testing today in the Grafenwoehr Training Area (GTA). Nearly one-third of the participants went “No-Go” Monday, 27 March. The remaining will continue testing in pursuit of the Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB). Testing ends 30 March, 2017. The pass rate is traditionally less than 18 percent.
The Expert Field Medical Badge is awarded to military personnel who complete a variety of physical, mental and written tests that determine their ability to quickly, accurately and effectively perform complex life-saving medical tasks while in a variety of hostile environments and situations. The EFMB is considered the medical equivalent of the Expert Infantryman's Badge, but is statistically harder to earn than the EIB.
This year's EFMB is hosted by the 212th Combat Support Hospital, 30th Medical Command. Qualification for the badge is considered a grueling experience by those who have earned it and the majority of participants do not make it to the final round..
The more than 200 U.S. and NATO servicemembers vying for the coveted badge come from posts across Europe. EFMB orientation takes place from 20 – 27 March with testing beginning Monday, 27 March and concluding on 30 March.

Our wonderful chairperson of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) who volunteers her time to raise funds for our school which includes our upcoming Gala in March. With a roll of over 700 students at our school this is an enormous task. Well done Jackie.

Britney Spears was coolly composed on the first live episode of "The X Factor." The same can't be said for new host Khloe Kardashian Odom and her microphone.
Odom, adding to her reality TV credentials, was paired with Mario Lopez to emcee "X Factor" as the singing contest shifted Wednesday from taped to live broadcasts.
Lopez, host of "Extra," performed like the pro he is. Odom came across like the novice she is, shouting her lines despite the mic clutched in her hand and making awkward small talk with contestants and judge and executive producer Simon Cowell.
When Lopez teased 13-year-old singer Diamond White about having a boyfriend, the girl replied, "No, we're friends. My mom would kill me."
"Don't let your mom kill you," exclaimed Odom, drawing a confused smile from White.
At another point, Odom sounded like an oddly flirtatious schoolgirl as she introduced Cowell as "Mr. Sexy."
In a conference call Tuesday, Cowell had discussed expectations for his co-host, a member of reality TV's first family that includes sister Kim Kardashian. Odom's credits include "Khloe and Lamar" with husband Lamar Odom, a Los Angeles Clippers player.
She wants to "prove a point," Cowell said, noting observers had questioned Odom's readiness to steer a live program.
He warned that she would need "nerves of steel" Wednesday because she had less rehearsal time than planned.
"I kind of like to see the unpredictable and I quite like seeing people under pressure and just how they deal with it," Cowell said. Odom and Lopez replaced first-season host Steve Jones, a U.K. TV personality.
Cowell also expressed reservations about how Spears would manage.
While lauding her as "very, very good judge" so far, he told the teleconference it was unclear "what she's going to be like on a live show" involving competition between judges over the contestants they are mentoring.
Spears, a pop princess who has struggled in her personal life, including spells in rehab, proved up to the task. She heaped praise on singers and remained calm when criticism was leveled at those she's guiding.
When Cowell told one teenager that "we need to sort your vocals out," Spears shot back, "I disagree. I think you're a true star."
It was Cowell himself who committed the biggest flub of the night: He was bleeped for using what appeared to be British slang found questionable by Fox.
Of the 16 acts featured on the live "X Factor," four will be cut Thursday by Spears, Cowell, Antonio "L.A." Reid and Demi Lovato. Viewers will decide contestants' fates in following weeks.
Cowell took a moment at the start of Wednesday's show to express sympathy for Hurricane Sandy victims on the East Coast, saying, "our hearts are with you and we hope things get sorted out quickly."
An on-screen crawl invited viewers to donate to the American Red Cross.
I've been asked to create some wedding invitations so I'm preparing a portfolio for approval.
I've already looked at lettering and initials and today I'm experimenting with hearts.
This will be the background and then I will add some lettering:it is a mixed media piece.
The heart is stitched newspaper ( what else!) which has been coloured with ink, gold acrylic paint and pearlescent tinting medium. After cutting out the shape I placed it on a double layer of white net and stitched round the outside to create a lacey effect. I then mounted this on a double layer of hand dyed blanket and added the outside trimming.
I'm not sure what colour scheme will be so I'm just winging it at the moment. However, I have permission to do "arty" and "whacky" versions as well as more traditional ones.My fingers are itching!

The operations were designed to disrupt insurgent leadership, reduce the threat of improvised explosive devices and protect the local population against insurgent influence, intimidation and violence.
The Special Operations Task Group (SOTG), is a Task Group of about 310 personnel. SOTG operates in support of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), security operations and provides security and force protection for coalition forces in Oruzgan Province. The SOTG consists of Commandos, members of the Special Air Service and enabling support personnel.

LOS ANGELES - The Board of Fire Commissioners and the Los Angeles Fire Department executive leadership recognized the LAFD Arson/Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) Inter-Agency House of Worship Arson Task Force for their tireless work in identifying, capturing, and convicting a person who was preying on churches in the Los Angeles area.
In addition to our agency partners, the following members of the LAFD Inter-Agency House of Worship Arson Task Force were officially recognized on February 19, 2019, for their leadership coordinating the task force, instrumental contributions towards making an arrest, and commitment to gaining justice for the City of Los Angeles:
