The festival of Maulidi takes place every year in Muslim-majority countries during the whole third month of the Arabic calendar, alleged date when Prophet Mohammed was born. In Lamu, Kenya, a small town on the eponymous island, 99% of the population is Muslim. And this particular celebration is important. It brings together thousands of worshipers from Kenya as well as from other parts of East Africa, the Middle East and other parts of the world.
The introduction of Tariqa (a school of Sufism) by Ali Habib Swaleh, a Comoran Shariff is the reason why Lamu became an important religion center on the XIXth Century…and still attracts many people from the Comoro Islands. Maulidi climaxes during the two last days, when the Mawlid (religious poetry) are being recited incessantly while the men and young boys parade from Swaleh’s grave to the island’s main Mosque Riyadha in a colorful procession.
Maulidi is famous for its boat races taking place close to the seashore and donkey races in the streets, which put the city in a fever of excitement during a few weeks. There is also this strange dance with a stick called Goma: White djellaba-dressed men standing in a row sway a walking stick in front of them, to the hypnotic rhythm of drums.

The star is the Donkey!
There was two races. For the finale, the jockeys were not happy with the money promised to the winners, so they decided to go on..strike! The donkeys have funny names like: Obama, Rooney, Vieria, Messi...

The procession looked more like a demonstration, when you read the banner they were carrying!
A hotel employee earns less than $100 a month, a “good” salary in the archipelago… but which isn’t enough to pay the trimestral $100 required for school for example. Most young people are unemployed, and are used as touts for the taxi-boats, or improvise themselves as tour guides. The working-class areas have evocative names such as Kashmiri, Bombay or Kandahari, which gives a sense of the divide between glamour Lamu and everyday Lamu.

"Babur meeting with Sultan Ali Mirza at the Kohik River", from "The Memoirs of Babur". Watercolor and gold on paper, painted about 1590. Part of the exhibit "Art and Stories of Mughal India" at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Mughal ruler Babur was born in 1483, and came to power in 1494. (His father was tending some pigeons in a dovecote constructed next to a cliff. The foundations gave way, and he plunged to his death in the ravine below.) He lived in Fergana, in the far eastern portion of what is now Uzbekistan. His uncles were eager to replace him, or, barring that, install his younger brother Jahangir on the throne. Moreover, relatives ruled most of the small states surrounding him, and were eager to conquer his small nation.
Babur immediately sought allies in his desperate quest for security. One of the first he met with was Sultan Ali Mirza Safavi ("mirza" meaning "prince"), leader of the Safaviyya.
Safi-ad-din Ardabili was a Kurdish mystic. Living in Gilan province of Iran on the Caspian Sea beginning in 1276, he started a new school (tariqa) of Islam known as Safaviyya. His teachings emphasized feeding the poor, aiding the weak, communal meals, socializing in a zawiya (lodge), sama (a form of worship that involves singing, playing instruments, dancing, recitation of poetry, prayers, and wearing symbolic attire), and dhikr (short phrases or prayers are repeatedly recited silently or aloud). Safi died in 1334, but he'd established a dynasty that turned militant by 1450. By 1501, the Safavids had conquered all of Persia (modern Iran). They also ruled Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bahrain, Georgia, Iraq, Kurwait, the North Caucasus, and parts of Pakistan, Syria, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. It collapsed in 1722.
Sultan Ali Mirza had assumed leadership of the emerging Safavid Empire in 1488. He was leading his people in the conquest of Uzbekistan when Babur met with him. The meeting was an extremely important one, for by aligning with the Safavids Babur would make a military alliance that could help him fend off his jealous relatives and keep his throne secure.
As it turned out, Sultan Ali Mirza was assassinated shortly after his meeting with Babur. His son, Ismail I, turned his attention to conquering Persia. Babur allied with Selim I, ruler of the Ottoman Empire, who supplied him with matchlock muskets and artillery. This enabled Babur to begin the conquest of his neighbors. But since these territories were threatened by the Afghans, he had to conquer Afghanistan. And since Afghanistan was threatened by India, into India he went.

The Chishtī Order (Persian: چشتی - Čištī) (Arabic: ششتى - Shishti) is a Sufi order within the mystic Sufi tradition of Islam. It began in Chisht, a small town near Herat, Afghanistan about 930 CE. The Chishti Order is known for its emphasis on love, tolerance, and openness.[1]
The Chishti Order is primarily followed in Afghanistan and South Asia. It was the first of the four main Sufi orders (Chishti, Qadiriyya, Suhrawardiyya and Naqshbandi) to be established in this region. Moinuddin Chishti introduced the Chishti Order in Lahore (Punjab) and Ajmer (Rajasthan), sometime in the middle of the 12th century CE. He was eighth in the line of succession from the founder of the Chishti Order, Abu Ishq Shami. There are now several branches of the order, which has been the most prominent South Asian Sufi brotherhood since the 12th century.[2]
In the last century, the order has spread outside Afghanistan and South Asia. Chishti teachers have established centers in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and South Africa.
Guiding principles[edit]
The Chishti are perhaps best known for the welcome extended to seekers who belong to other religions. Chishti shrines in South Asia are open to all faiths and attract great crowds to their festivals.
The Chishti shykhs have also stressed the importance of keeping a distance from worldly power.[3] A ruler could be a patron or a disciple, but he or she was always to be treated as just another devotee. A Chishti teacher should not attend the court or be involved in matters of state, as this will corrupt the soul with worldly matters. In his last discourse to his disciples, Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti said:
“Never seek any help, charity, or favors from anybody except God. Never go the court of kings, but never refuse to bless and help the needy and the poor, the widow, and the orphan, if they come to your door.[4]”
Chishti believe that this insistence on otherworldliness differentiates them from Sufi orders that maintained close ties to rulers and courts, and deferred to aristocratic patrons.
Chishti practice is also notable for sama: evoking the divine presence Sufi's use to listening to Qawwali.[5] The Chishti, as well as some other Sufi orders, believe that Qawwali can help devotees forget self in the love of Allah. However, the order also insists that followers observe the full range of Muslim obligations; it does not dismiss them as mere legalism, as some strands of Sufism have done.[6] The Qawwali usually heard at Chisti shrines and festivals is qawwali.
Practices[edit]
The Chishtis follow five basic devotional practices (dhikr).[7]
Reciting the names of Allāh loudly, sitting in the prescribed posture at prescribed times (jhikr-i djahr)
Reciting the names of Allāh silently (jhikr-i khafī)
Regulating the breath (pās-i anfās)
Absorption in mystic contemplation (murā-ḳāba)
Forty days of spiritual confinement in a lonely corner or cell for prayer and contemplation (čilla)
Literature[edit]
Early Chishti shaykhs adopted concepts and doctrines outlined in two influential Sufi texts: the ʿAwārif al-Maʿārif of Shaykh Shihāb al-Dīn Suhrawardī and the Kashf al-Maḥdjūb of Hudjwīrī. These texts are still read and respected today. Chishti also read collections of the sayings, speeches, poems, and letters of the shaykhs. These collections, called malfūẓāt, were prepared by the shaykh's disciples.[8]
Spiritual lineage[edit]
Sufi orders trace their origins ultimately to the Islamic prophet Muhammad, who is believed to have instructed his successor in mystical teachings and practices in addition to the Qur'an or hidden within the Qur'an. Opinions differ as to this successor. Some Sufi orders trace their lineage to Abu Bakr, the first Sunni caliph, others to 'Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Muhammad's cousin, whom the Shi'a regard as the first imam. The Chishti, though Sunni, trace their lineage through Ali. This is not unusual for Sufi orders, which tend to stress devotion rather than legalism and sectarianism.
The traditional silsila (spiritual lineage) of the Chishti order is as follows:[9]
'Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (d. 728, an early Persian Muslim theologian)
'Abdul Wāḥid Bin Zaid Abul Faḍl (d. 793, an early Sufi saint)
Fuḍayl ibn 'Iyāḍ Bin Mas'ūd Bin Bishr al-Tamīmī
Ibrāhīm bin Adham (a legendarly early Sufi ascetic)
Ḥudhayfah al-Mar'ashī
Amīnuddīn Abū Ḥubayrah al-Baṣrī
Mumshād Dīnwarī
Abu Ishaq Shamī (d. 940, founder of the Chishti order proper)
Abu Ahmad Chishtī
Abu Muhammad Chishtī
Abu Yusuf Nasar-ud-Din Chishtī (d. 1067)
Qutab-ud-Din Maudood Chishtī (Abu Yusuf's son, d. 1139)
Haji Sharif Zindani (d. 1215)
Usman Harooni (d. 1220)
Mu'īnuddīn Chishtī (1141-1230)
Qutab-ud-Din Bakhtyar Kaki (1173-1228)
Farīduddīn Mas'ūd ("Baba Farid", 1173 or 1175 - 1266)
After Farīduddīn Mas'ūd, the Chishti order divided into two branches:
Chishtī Sabri, who follow Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari.
Chishtī Nizami who follow Nizāmuddīn Auliyā.
History[edit]

The Encyclopedia of Islam divides Chishti history into four periods:
Era of the great shaykhs (circa 597/1200 to 757/1356)
Era of the provincial khānaḳāhs (8th/14th & 9th/15th centuries)
Rise of the Ṣābiriyya branch (9th/15th century onwards)
Revival of the Niẓāmiyya branch (12th/18th century onwards[10])
The order was founded by Abu Ishaq Shami ("the Syrian") who taught Sufism in the town of Chisht, some 95 miles east of Herat in present-day western Afghanistan.[11] Before returning to Syria, where he is now buried next to Ibn Arabi at Jabal Qasioun[12] Shami initiated, trained and deputized the son of the local emir, Abu Ahmad Abdal.[13] Under the leadership of Abu Ahmad’s descendants, the Chishtiya as they are also known, flourished as a regional mystical order.[14]
The founder of the Chishti Order in South Asia was Moinuddin Chishti. He was born in the province of Silistan in eastern Persia around 536 AH (1141 CE), into a sayyid family claiming descent from Muhammad.[15] When he was only nine, he memorized the Qur'an, thus becoming a hafiz. His father died when he was a teenager; Moinuddin inherited the family grinding mill and orchard. He sold everything and gave the proceeds to the poor. He traveled to Balkh and Samarkand, where he studied the Qur'an, hadith, and fiqh.[16] He looked for something beyond scholarship and law and studied under the Chishti shaykh Usman Harooni. He moved to Lahore and then to Ajmer, where he died. His tomb, in Ajmer, is the Dargah Sharif, a popular shrine and pilgrimage site.
Moinuddin was followed by Qutab-ud-Din Bakhtyar Kaki and Farīduddīn Mas'ūd 'Baba Farid'. After Fariduddin, the Chishti Order of South Asia split into two branches. Each branch was named after one of Fariduddin's successors:
Nizamuddin Auliya - This branch became the Chishti Nizami branch. Nizamuddin Auliya taught Nasiruddin Chiragh Dehlavi who in turn taught Khwaja Bande Nawaz.
Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari - This branch became the Chishti-Sabiri branch.
Later, yet other traditions branched from the Chisti lineage; in many cases they merged with other popular Sufi orders in South Asia. Founders of such new branches of the lineage include:
Ashraf Jahangir Semnani - trained in the Nizami tradition; his followers became the Chishti Nizami Ashrafiya branch.
Haji Imdadullah Muhaajir Makki - trained in the Sabari tradition; his followers became the Chishtiya Sabaria Imdadiya branch.
Shah Niyaz Ahmad- united the Chishti Nizami order with the Qadriya order to form the Chishtiya Qadriya Nizamia Niyazia branch.
As a result of this merging of the Chishti order with other branches, most Sufi masters now initiate their disciples in all the four major orders of South Asia: Chishti, Suhrawadi, Qadri, and Naqshbandi. They do however, teach devotional practices typical of the order with which they are primarily associated.
The Chishti order has also absorbed influences and merged at times with various antinomian fakir Sufi groups, especially the Qalandar. Some Chishtis both past and present have lived as renunciants or as wandering dervish.[17] In more recent times, a more contemporary expression of traditional Chishti Sufi practices can be found in the establishment of the Ishq-Nuri Tariqa[18] in the 1960s, as a branch of the Chishti-Nizami silsila.[19]
Mughal rulers[edit]
Several rulers of the Mughal dynasty of South Asia were Chisti devotees. The emperor Akbar was perhaps the most fervent of them. It is said to be by the blessing of Sheikh Salim Chishti that Akbar's first surviving child, the future Jahangir, was born. The child was named Salim after the sheikh and was affectionately addressed by Akbar as Sheikhu Baba.
Akbar also credited the Chisti sheikhs with his victory at the Siege of Chittorgarh. Akbar had vowed to visit the Chisti dargah, the tomb of Moinuddin Chishti, at Ajmer if he were victorious. He fulfilled his vow by visiting the dargah with his musicians, who played in honor of the sheikh.
Shah Jahan's daughter, Jahanara Begum Sahib, was also a devout follower of the Chisti Order.

Al-Rifa‘i (Ahmad ibn ʽAli al-Rifaʽi) 1119-1183, was an Iraqi Sunni Muslim preacher, ascetic, mystic, jurist, and theologian, known for being the eponymous founder of the Rifaʽi tariqa (Sufi order) of Islam. Although this mosque is named after him, the shrine contains the burials of his grandson, 'Ali Abu Shibbak al-Rifai and another Sufi mystic, 'Abd Allah al-Ansari.
The Mosque of al-Rifa'i replaced a zawiya (shrine) of the sufi saint, al-Rifa'i. It is also the royal mausoleum of Muhammad 'Ali's family, in addition to Hosh al-Basha (the Courtyard of the Pasha), in the Southern Cemetery.
Patron: commissioned by Hoshiyar Qadin (Hoşyar Kadın) ?-1885, consort to Ibrahim Pasha & Walida Pasha to their son, Isma'il Pasha.
Original architect: Hussein Pasha Fahmi (a distant cousin of Muhammad 'Ali), Minister of Awqaf, who died in 1880 when work stopped.
Construction Supervisor: Khalil Agha chief eunuch & director of estates for Isma'il Pasha.
Completed: work resumed in 1905 when the Khedive, Abbas II, ordered its completion. Work was supervised by architect Max Herz (Herz Miksa, Hungarian) 1856-1919, head of the Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l'Art Arabe.
Tomb of Hoshiyar Qadin (Hoşyar Kadın) d.1986, wife of Ibrahim (Kavalalı İbrahim Paşa) 1789-1848, eldest son of Muhammad Ali (reigned briefly during his father's incapacity, 1848). Mother of Isma'il (İsmail Paşa, Ismail the Magnificent) 1830-1895 (grandson of Muhammad 'Ali, Wali of Egypt & Sudan (r.1863-1867)).

Hala Sultan Tekke or the Mosque of Umm Haram (Greek: Τεκές Χαλά Σουλτάνας Tekés Chalá Soultánas; Turkish: Hala Sultan Tekkesi) is a Muslim shrine on the west bank of Larnaca Salt Lake, near Larnaca, Cyprus. Umm Haram (Turkish: Hala Sultan) was the wife of Ubada bin al-Samit, a companion of the Prophet Muhammed.
Hala Sultan Tekke complex is composed of a mosque, mausoleum, minaret, cemetery, and living quarters for men and women. The term tekke (convent) applies to a building designed specifically for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood, or tariqa, and may have referred to an earlier feature of the location. The present-day complex, open to all and not belonging to a single religious movement, lies in a serene setting on the shores of the Larnaca Salt Lake, which appears to be an important site also in prehistory.
Most accounts establish a connection between the site and the death of Umm Haram during the first Arab raids on Cyprus under the Caliph Muawiyah between 647 and 649, which were later pursued throughout the Umayyad and the Abbasid periods. According to these accounts, Umm Haram, being of very old age, had fallen from her mule and had died during a siege of Larnaca. She was later buried where she died. According to Shia belief, her grave lies within Jannatul Baqi cemetery in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

Goma sticks dance in Maulidi festival .The stick dance is performed by old men in front of the mosques. It is a good idea to give them a little note. I had only big ones, but no problem, while they were dancing, they made the change!

The Madariyya are members of a Sufi order (tariqa) popular in North India, especially in Uttar Pradesh, the Mewat region, Bihar and Bengal, as well as in Nepal and Bangladesh. Known for its syncretic aspects, lack of emphasis on external religious practice and focus on internal dhikr, it was initiated by the Sufi saint 'Sayed Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar' (d. 1434 CE), called "Qutb-ul-Madar", and is centered around his shrine (dargah) at Makanpur, Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh.
Originating from the Tayfuriya order, as his Pir, spiritual teacher was Bayazid Tayfur al-Bistami, Madariya reached its zenith in the late Mughal period between 15th to 17th century, and gave rise to several new orders as Madar's disciples spread through the Northern plains of India, into Bengal. As with most Sufi orders, its name Madariya too has been created by adding a Nisba to the name its founder, Madar in this case lead to Madariya, sometimes spelled as Madariyya, though it is also referred as Tabaqatiya at many places.[1][2][3][4][5]
He was blessed with long life of 96 years and his presence is found from Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani at Baghdad Sharif till Sufi Chisti saint Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer .
Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar or Qutbul Madar was born in 742 Hijri as per Islamic calendar at Halab, Syria. In the book "Gulzar-e-Madar", the author Maulana Sayed Mehmood has written that Hazrat Huzaifa Sayed himself has stated that one day in a dream Prophet Muhammad, came to him and said:" his child is a Wali of the almighty Allah and is from my origin. The Muslims belonging to Zinda Shah Madar are called Shah, sai or syed.
In the book Taskiratulkram fi Ahwale Khulafa-e-Arbo Islam, it is written that Hazrat Sayed Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar had the knowledge of all the four books which came from the Paradise. At the age of 14, Hazrat Sayed Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar had memorised the Quran Shareef and had read its existence values as well he got knowledge of other religious topics.
His Pir or Sheikh was 'Sayed Bayzid Bustami' (Sultan Arafeen). Hazrat Sayed Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar was pledged with the Tayfooriya order and was being said as Silsila-e-Tayfooriya. The decent
Zinda Shah Madar has visited many countries and had extensively preached Islam & the true message of prophet Muhammad. He is said to visited almost all places in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Iran, Baghdad, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and many more places around the world.
[edit]Dargah
The Dargah or the tomb of Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar is located at Makanpur, near Kanpur city, in Uttar Pradesh state in India. Till today it is visited by thousands of visitors every month and especially during the annual Urs celebrations.[6] Even Moghul rulers & emperor like Aurangzeb, Akbar, Shah Jahan, Ibrahim Shirki has paid their visits at the tomb. The dargah in Makanpūr gained increasing importance during the Mughal period. Various rulers donated land, while others erected buildings there. Aurangzeb (1068-1118/1658-1707) visited the shrine in the year 1069/1659 while marching against Shāh Shujāʿ.
[edit]The Tariqah
Most of the biographic details regarding Baduddin Zinda Shah Madar, are shrouded under numerous legends and stories of his numerous miracles, however, an important source of such information, come from his important hagiography, Mirat i-Madari written in 1654 by Abd ur-Rahman Chisti. Since then a number of hagiographic texts have emerged.[7] The silsilah (lineage) is still live throughout the world with the pir-muridi tradition. The Pir's of Makanpur sharif are 'Sayed's" (decedents of prophet Mohammed ). The Madariya chain of Sufi brotherhood is the oldest, largest & fastest growing Sufi brotherhood of the ancient era.
