You strip the bark from the paper mulberry tree (hiapo), then you beat it into these strips, or rather the ladies do. The banging sound is a leitmotif of Tongan village life, if I may wax lyrical. Then you glue the strips together with a cassava paste thing and paint the sheet using vegetable dyes. Important for gift-giving during traditional ceremonies.
