You strip the bark from the paper mulberry tree (hiapo), then you beat it into these strips, or rather the ladies do. The banging sound is a leitmotif of Tongan village life, if I may wax lyrical. Then you glue the strips together with a cassava paste thing and paint the sheet using vegetable dyes. Important for gift-giving during traditional ceremonies.
Samoan people are of Polynesian ancestry. Their traditional hand beaten Tapa cloth uses softer tones than Fijian counterparts. This one, the size of a large bedspread, is very old and much admired. The islander holds red and yellow papaya (pawpaw) for comparison. He wears an authentic shark tooth necklet.
