"Fate was tricky like that. It consumed us when we thought we were free, and it freed us when we thought we were captured." -Shannon A. Thompson
On 19 March 2016, I was on a birding day trip with a group of friends, going SE of Calgary, E of High River. Though the day started off rather cold, it gradually warmed up and was a beautiful day to be out in nature.
I will add our leader's report that he sent into eBird, adding that I did not see all of the sightings, as the birds were much too far away. As always, my camera lens was turned to various other things, too. While my birding friends had their binoculars and scope focused on the very distant birds at this location at Frank Lake, my eyes began to wander. Couldn't resist trying to focus on the barbed-wire fence.
Thanks so much, as always, Andrew, for a most enjoyable day! Thanks, too, Anne, for driving - I really appreciated the ride!
"We had 16 participants when we left Calgary on a sunny but frosty morning.
We arrived at the main gate around 10:00 am and set off, in a chilly -5 deg C to walk down to the outfall and then around to the blind. The recent cold nights had refrozen some of the lake, but it is still mostly open water.
Most obvious were the thousands of Pintails and hundreds of swans (mostly Tundra today). We did see the overwintering (presumably) Song Sparrow near the outfall. About 60-80 California Gulls, no other gulls that we could identify.
We left and went to High River for lunch, stopping by the Sutherland Shelterbelt to acknowledge the resident Great Horned Owl.
After lunch we circled the lake on the usual roads and ended up at the Basin 2 West Bay. Several more swans and finally, the Eurasian Wigeon, spotted by Tony Timmons. By lunchtime the temperature had reached about 10 deg C and continued to rise reaching ~14 deg C and making a perfect Alberta Spring (almost) afternoon.
Leaving Frank Lake we stopped in at Blackie to find mostly Starlings, and a few Eurasian Collared Doves.
The list for Frank Lake and Blackie was:

From Blackie we stopped by Third Lake on the way back to Calgary. A huge number of birds there, somewhere between 4000 and 8000, generally somewhat distant. Mostly Pintails, but we also saw American Wigeon, Mallard, a few Canada Geese, and California Gulls.
Clearly Pintails are on the move right now."

I thought I'd go all arty and pretentious and say this is my interpretation of a nightmare scene in the 'Film Noir' style that was favoured in the 1930/40's movies. I hear you cry; "Come off it, it's just a dead tree!!!" You're right of course!☺
Hopelessly tangled. Wild Horse (Equus ferus) with a tangled mane and plastered with mud plies the sage flats of the McCullough Peaks prairie in Wyoming.
I've done shots similar to this before...but this time I tried it with lamps since there wasnt much sunlight...I liked how it turned out though.

GTWL-Cliches (What a tangled web we weave....)
She was married when we first meet
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam I guess
But I used a little too much force
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split it up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
She turned around to look at me
As I was walking away
I heard her say over my shoulder
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue"

Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue
I went out in the Backyard this morning and took a few photos, it was nice not shooting my face!
Happy Saturday :-)
The falls tumble 114 feet in as many as half a dozen braids down a broad cliff before consolidating and dropping over three more consecutive tiers of 14, 18 and 13 feet respectively.
Taken in October when the flow was low. Quite a bit more flow in the spring.
Have a fabulous Friday!
7DOS, Week #3 - About Me, Abstract Thursday - Another one from my (recent) archives and again taken for an ODC challenge.
I had an idea in mind, but the execution was too time-consuming considering we're on holiday, and so decided to use this as it represents complexity in some ways. Like my fellow 7DOS member, Sue www.flickr.com/photos/suerobertsnl/ , I am an eternal ex-pat. I don't live in my country of origin and have spent more years living in one foreign culture after the other than I can keep track of these days. It's exciting, but it always requires more effort than you imagine, looking in from the outside, as you have to work to get to know a place, deal with local beauracracy, make friends and adapt to (and even adopt) aspects of the place that is home-for-now, only to have to move on again after a period of time. This is an accident of fate rather than a consciously made decision, on my part at any rate, although there is the argument that nothing is an accident and that our choices determine where we go and what we do in our lives, even if we're not consciously deciding at the time.
I have lived in 7 countries and visited many more, although I've not yet made it to Asia or the USA. I speak 2 languages fluently and 2 more to a functional level (and have picked up and forgotten 2 others along the way). Our little family of Nomads is what is known as a third culture family: typically this is a situation where the parents are from one culture, the child/children are born in another and the family, as a rule, live in a third; in our case, we were all born in different countries and have lived in many more since LG was born 9 years ago.
The list goes on and on… it is an experience that offers us many wonderful and unique experiences, as well as regular challenges. We are fortunate in that it gives us the chance to properly experience cultures different to our own, but at the same time we are increasingly rootless; the inevitable social question "So, where are you from?" is a one for which Mr Nomad and I have a short, cut-off-questions-before-they-start answer and a longer you-really-want-to-know? answer :-) One of the reasons, by the way, that we return to Italy for our summer break is that it's the place in which we've spent the most time as a family and where each of us feels most at home.
ODC - Light It Up Blue (originally shot for this challenge in April 2014)
Part of a massive chandelier in a local shopping mall - seemed apt for today's challenge set by Laurama www.flickr.com/photos/47181226@N05/ in aid of Light It Up Blue - "… a worldwide movement with a mission to raise awareness for autism. April 2 is a World Autism Day and continues through the month of April. Many iconic landmarks, hotels, sporting venues, museums, bridges and stores will participate by lighting up with blue lights. I know the Empire State Building in New York City will be lit blue for this cause. If there are any places local to you participating in Light it up Blue you may be able to capture these lights."

So I took some photos of my Rapunzel dolls, just in order to make this pictures and showing that "Which Rapunzel do these dolls come from?"
I think the Disney on Ice Rapunzel doll has the most accurate head mold, it's perfect for OOAK. But she is very rare now.
And the Simba Rapunzel doll has very special design, her hair can glow in the night.
Thank you for your visit, comment or fave, all are much appreciated.

Every once in a while, a photo lends itself to using Tangled FX (an iPhone app). The effect is pretty specific, and may not be for everyone. I kinda like it...
The original is a photo of the Lafayette Monument in Paris along the Seine River.
Me trasmite una paz los colores, y siempre pensé en sacarle una foto a ese Árbol, EL Árbol!
No sé porque, y ese día, se dio todo muy dado.
