I love getting lost in every old Medina. It’s one of my passions. It’s a bit risky but you always discover something new.

Tangier is a city in northwestern Morocco. It is on the Maghreb coast at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Spartel. The town is the capital of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, as well as the Tangier-Assilah prefecture of Morocco.

Tangier Island is in the Chesapeake Bay. It is part of Virginia.
The island was discovered by John Smith in 1608. It was settled in the 1770's.
At one time, there were 1500 residents on the island. Today, there are about 400.
Because of sea level rise, approximately 67% of the island has disappeared since 1850. Its expected that within 50 years, the island will be gone.
On October 1, 2021, Judy and I took a ferry from Onancock, VA, to the island.
A view of downtown Tangier. We had a wonderful lunch at Lorraine's Seafood Restaurant. The cream of crab soup was outstanding! We actually went back for seconds.
Most residents get around on golf carts. On the extended golf carts, you can get a 15-minute (that's all the time you need!) tour of the island for $5.
It was a sunrise I'll never forget. We had arrived on Tangier Island the afternoon before. It was hot out. Very hot. So we cowered in the air conditioning until sunset. We got some great evening shots and then retired from the long day.
The next morning, we walked out of the B&B at 5:30 and the sky was on fire. We didn't know where to go as we had not scouted for sun rise shots. We scurried along towards the sun rise until we found a path. The first thing I saw was these birdhouses silhouetted over the marsh and bay. I can't wait to go back to Tangier Island.

This is the main street on the island. Most people get around in golf carts. As you can see, the street is so narrow that two golf carts fill the street!
Each night once the sun set, from each minaret would come the evening call to prayer indicating the day's fast was over.
