Day 5: Tangier, Morocco

On Tangier, there are no drug stores, department stores, traffic lights, arcades, or movie theaters. There is virtually no crime, and only one police officer. There is no jail. Power is provided by an underwater cable that runs to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, although generators are on the island if needed. A microwave tower provides cable, internet, and phone service. Water is obtained from very deep wells and stored in the water tower. There is one combined school on Tangier, with about 90 students in grades K-12, and 15 teachers. Most years the graduating class has about 6 students. Barges from the mainland deliver building materials and mobile homes.

"No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes..." The Lyrics to King of the Road come to mind when thinking of Tangier. On an island with a year-round population of about 500, it's a laid back and tranquil pace of life with a unique dialect.

Tangier Rappahannock Cruises whisked us from Buzzard Point Marina to Tangier Island late in the morning of May 14, 2016. We rented a golf cart to get around the island since there are no vehicles. I used a Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 to track points along the route as best I could.

Burials are shallow on Tangier island in the Chesapeake Bay. The island is sinking and has lost nearly 70 percent of its landmass since 1850. It is expected to be uninhabitable by humans within decades.
