I love the way the post-it note appears to be floating on the air, and casting a shadow. I also like that the only color is blue, and it is centrally located. I wanted the light to glisten around the paper, and be just the right tone of bright. I strategically made this picture close enough to where the background didn't interfere, but at the same time, I wanted a bit of it to show. I also believe that it is important that not only the words are focused, but everything else as well.

By now we have all seen the tragic destruction and loss of life surrounding the natural disaster in Japan. In desperate times like these having people and organizations to help individuals pull through is incredibly important. It not only provides immediate tangible help but also develops a vital sense of community for those involved.
There has been a truly earnest response among the Japanese community at the unanticipated level of caring and support the rest of the world has shown in the past few days. Many friends have been truly thankful for even the small messages sent to make sure they were alright following the earthquake and tsunami.
To me this was important. The strong sense of community among the Japanese is truly something unique and it has always to me been something I have aspired to.
I, like many of you, have people in my life who have been affected to different degrees by this disaster. Like many of you I have also in some form donated money to help the relief effort. However, I began to feel guilty knowing I could do much more.
So this is my offer and my challenge to you all.
I want you to donate a minimum of $15 I will be taking donations on behalf of the Red Cross. In exchange, I want to take one sincere picture of you, holding up a badge of support. All the money collected will be donated to the relief effort. I will also be putting together a photo blog to showcase the people being a part of this effort.
This is what I would like to represent our message:
Special thanks go to shing02
It's simple enough but the value of it is so much more.
We can all do our part to help on a financial level. However, to me there is more than just financial support. I want people to know the face behind the gesture. I want to showcase that the international community is forever a part of the Japanese community. To me the worth of that support is equally as vital to people as assisting them financially in times of need.
To those who feel they can help be a part of this in other ways, please do so. Whether you take up your own camera and follow suit, make it your own or find another creative way you can use your talents and personal time to help the situation, put in the effort and be a part in creating an international community. I would much rather we all work on this together.
That is my challenge, be a part of this. Whether it is on one side of the lens or the other, help out and build a community that will ultimately bring a lot of good in a lot of valuable ways.
The images will be put up on a blog. The more people involved, the more we can show how much the international community is really a part and the more significant a difference we can actually make. If you know of people wanting to be involved please let them know.
So please, contact me or anyone involved and let's make this grow. You can reach me at mariuszphotography@gmail.com
For those looking to help in other regards you can do so via the Red Cross in a number of ways.
Finally, I would also like to encourage others to use these pictures in their Facebook profiles similar to the current badges going around to help spread the message to donate.
Thank you everyone!

Iona is one of the most venerated places in Scotland. It receives its renown as it was the base of the Irish Christian missionary St Columba, who in 563 AD landed on the island with twelve followers and settled there. But little tangible evidence remains that predates Christianity, except for an Iron Age fort on Dun Bhuirg, used between 200 BC and 200 AD. The island is void of megaliths. But this rather pristine condition may actually be a tell-tale clue that the island was considered to be sacred.
In 83 AD, Demetrius of Tarsus had been asked by the Roman Emperor to sail around the north of Scotland, to draw a map. Demetrius spoke to Plutarch, another mapmaker of the British Isle, and stated that he came across one island which was a retreat for holy men who were considered inviolate by the native peoples living nearby.

'Kimono in:tangible' presented fashion garments and objects created by fourteen groups of students from Level 2 BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles and BA (Hons) Fashion Media and Industries. The exhibition reflected on the value ascribed to vintage clothing, and how historical artefacts can be re-interpreted for contemporary audiences and consumers.
The garments and objects were inspired by the kimono, a full-length wide-sleeved robe originating in Japan in the late eighth century. To develop their designs, the students researched traditional Japanese fashion and culture, and how these could be translated for a global audience. Made through various processes of deconstruction and reconstruction, the final garments and objects express less tangible aspects of fashion and material culture, such as the meanings and memories associated with the kimono by previous wearers and generations.

Three MIT Ph.D. candidates present their research. Daniel Leithinger proposes that information can be conveyed by changing the shape and material properties of physical objects. His actuated tabletop display Relief renders and animates shapes, which users can touch and deform with their hands. Xiao Xiao is interested in how we can interact with information the way we interact with music, not with the abstract content perceived consciously and intellectually but as moving, visceral experiences. She will present MirrorFugue, an interface for interaction with remote and recorded piano performances that viscerally evokes the presence of pianist. Lining Yao will demonstrate that the physical world can be programmed, diminished, or digitally fabricated for people to see, touch, and feel in new ways. Think: whoever starts to talk will be focused and the others around will be blurred in real life.

The Triangle Fire Open Museum is the tangible incarnation of the online Triangle Fire Open Archive, which explores the personal, political and historical legacy of the Triangle Fire through community-contributed objects. The Open Museum shows real and replica objects from the Open Archive in locations across the city that critically connect to issues of immigrant, women’s and labor rights.
The museum is being launched at the NYU Open House from March 20-March 25, and will then make its way out into the city to its initial eight host sites.
Take a self-guided tour to find all the objects around the city starting March 30, 2012!

On Facebook, someone ask me if if anything productive might result from the TLA discussions?
Here's what I wrote in reply.
Productive? Main value, in my opinion, is the conversations for their own sake; however earlier versions of TLA have tried to produce something. The discussions were aimed at trying to reach consensus and develop something to benefit the learning process.
One tangible outcome is this "reflective garden," pictured above. It came out of earlier TLA discussions and evolved into a project. I sometimes think of it as a solution looking for a problem, however. More benches for sitting and contemplating life at Western's campus. There's lots of benches up on campus anyway. The whole campus is in a park like setting. Now there's more, this reflective garden between Carver Gym and College Hall. It was installed before I started going to some of the TLA discussions.
Maybe they should put a reflective garden at the "rat race" intersection of Meridian and I-5. That's up by Bellis Fair Mall in Bellingham.
That's where there's a big need for calming reflection. I've heard the term "traffic calming devices;" like flower gardens in the middle of an intersection. Force the cars to slow down and go around.
