Like many Canadians, I have a certain affection for paintings by members of the Group of Seven (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_of_Seven_(artists) ). Among their images are several jack line images by Tom Thomson. I picked this Swiss Chard leaf from the garden and after taping it to a window pane to flatten it as best as possible, I photographed it using a macro lense. The area shown here is about 6-7cm wide, to give you a sense of scale. What drew me to this particular cropping and composition is the resemblance to the trees in those Thomson paintings. The intense colours, brought out by back-lighting, are quite well represented here and are not, in my opinion, exaggerated at all, in case you were wondering. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro lense, Aperture priority mode, f/10.0 (struggling to manage depth of field here), 2 sec with an EV-1.0 exposure bias to manage the excessive brightness in the back-lit subject. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee: decrease exposure to get a more natural look, slightly increase contrast, apply noise reduction, sharpen. PP in free Open Source GIMP: pull down/darken the bottom 10% of the tone curve to get a more realistic near-black tone, sharpen, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale to 1800 wide for posting. Note: The colours are really this intense and no saturation or vibrance adjustments were made. In fact, the trick is to keep the deep reds from blowing out.

This was one of the first flowers out in the garden after the snow melted . It has no finished blooming, but while it was out, I managed to try a few macro shots at two times life size to try and produce a bit of abstract colour. This is a straight shot with minimal post-processing.

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macros lense to which was attached a Raynox DCR250 (to yield a 2:1 reproduction ratio, i.e 2x life size on the sensor), Aperture priority mode, f/5.6 (marked), 1/200 sec. PP in free Open Source GIMP from jpeg source file: adjust tone curve to set black point, slightly increase overall contrast, sharpen, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale to 1800 wide for posting.

"A Real Woman could stop you from Drinking!"

"It'd have to be a real Big Woman!"

A great line from a great movie :-)

I would normally have cloned out the extraneous droplets but I thought they looked quite neat!

Strobist: Tabletop studio with two Yongnuo yn560s at 45 degrees facing the backdrop and parallel with the subject for some spill light. RF603s triggered the set up and a yn126 remote shutter releaser was used to fire. A black card to the left of frame created the blacks in the flow.

I found a very small oak tree growing along the Niagara Escarpment edge along the top of the gorge of The Forty (a creek in Grimsby, Ontario), and noticed that not only had it turned a nice red fall colour, but also that parts of the leaf had been eaten away, presumably by insects. The effect was somewhat like a damaged stained glass window. After several attempts to photograph it in-situ, I gave up trying to capture a moment in which the wind stopped long enough to get a clean image, and simply plucked the leaf, took it home and taped it to a window inside. In that way I was able to get it pretty flat (not perfectly) and the back lighting brought out the colours and veining, much like what I had seen originally. The colours in the eaten out areas come from very overexposed shrubs outside the house. Sunday, the Bando de Kvar (www.flickr.com/groups/2472126@N24/ ) met for one of our irregular, pseudo-official coffee and conversation sessions and the leaf was still up. Fellow Bando member, Matt captured a shot of the leaf (www.flickr.com/photos/taggartjm/15392926498/ ) and posted it earlier today. At this time of year, it is pretty hard to top Mother Nature. - JW

Leaf taped down to a window to keep it as flat as practical. Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 lense, ISO100, Aperture priority mode, f/8.0, 1/10 sec with an EV+0.33 exposure bias,. PP of RAW/NEF file in free Open Source RAWTherapee: slightly lighten exposure, slight contrast boost, slight increase in black level, slight vibrance boost, apply noise reduction, apply micro-contrast, sharpen. PP in free Open Source GIMP: set black point in tone curve, lock tone curve about 10% up from the black end and pull dark end of curve down slightly to darken the very darkest parts of the image only, very slightly pull up the top part of the curve to lighten image overall, sharpen, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale to 1800 wide for posting.
