Went for a walk close to where we live in Tewkesbury and this moth was in the hedgerow.

It's been a long winter of no photos! Back in the field today with some snowdrops :)

We have a pair of Muskoka chairs sitting in the yard and both are a tad the worse for wear, needing bot repairs and paint. Muskoka chairs are the common name in this region of the world (Grimsby, Ontario) for a very popular chair found along the entire Eastern North American vacation spots. However, the name South of the border is typically 'Adirondack' chair due to its popularity In that Eastern US mountain vacation range. As I said, it is in need of some attention and as I was inspecting it, it struck me that a pretty nice abstract should be possible in a close up of the paint and exposed wood. Recently, I have been posting images that conform to a Red Rule. A family member asked if it was restricted to red and I said it was not. So here is a Blue Rule shot. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lense, ISO100, Auto WB Aperture priority mode, f/9.0, 1/15 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: resize image to 9000x6000, reduce exposure slightly, increase contrast slightly, boost black level just a little, boost vibrance, adjust colour balance to slightly warm the image, enable micro-contrast, apply noise reduction, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: sharpen, slightly increase contrast, slightly boost green channel only saturation to bring up the lichens a bit, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000 (my preferred size for prepping an image to be used on-line), add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale to 1800 wide for posting.

Yet another in the ongoing familiarization with working very close up with my new (to me) Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lense used in conjunction with my Raynox DCR250 setup. This is a macro at about 1.75x life size on the sensor. The flower is Chicory, a common roadside weed throughout this area and this particular plant is only a couple of hundred metres from home. I was actually looking for cyan but that colour is very hard to find in flowers I am familiar with, so this will have to do for now. - JW

Date Taken: 2014-08-22

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lense fully extended (i.e set to 1:1 reproduction ratio for the lense by itself) with a Raynox DCR250 close-up lense attached (yielding approximately 1.75x life size on the sensor), ISO100, Aperture priority mode, f/8.0, 1/160 sec, white balance set to cloudy. PP in free Open Source GIMP: load the image twice as layers, adjust the contrast and brightness of the bottom layer to make the core and pollen stand out a bit better disregarding the impact on the rest of the image, use a large soft-edged eraser tool to remove the core and pollen areas from the top layer to reveal the improved tonality area below, create new working layer from visible result, adjust colour balance to remove excess red and green and get the colour of the background petals closer to the flower colour, slightly increase brightness and contrast, sharpen, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale to 1800 wide for posting

Tiny bubbles! It's fun to take a closer look at something I see a lot when I work.

Strobist: 1 sb-800 camera left, 1 sb-25 camera right (can't remember settings), both bare and directed towards the spout.

Here is my little old measuring tape which belonged to my grandfather. I always use it because it works very well and i find it very beautiful :)

Voici mon vieux gallon à mesurer ( compact ) qui appartenait à mon grand-père. Je m'en sers toujours car il fonctionne encore très bien et je le trouve très beau :)
