Here's the answer to my recent abstract post. Simply a glass of water, refracting sunlight onto a vitamin D tablet at lunchtime. Not set up, I just noticed it when I put the glass down. Thanks to all those who had a guess. Happy New Year to you all :-)

Sierra County, California. This happened to be only the second recorded specimen from Sierra County, and a range extension from their known range but not unsurprising.

These are really impressive flies, and it is quite something to see them flying around coupled. I believe this is one of the few times I have been able to capture the moment.
