I've been having some 'Lessons' on Macro photography ... it looks like I'm going to need more !!!

For some time now I've been wanting to see one of these wasp spiders that have recently arrived in the UK from the continent and have slowly spread over the south of England. Today I got up at 6.15 and headed early to the Sussex Wildlife Trust's wonderful Malling Down Nature Reserve in the hope of seeing the second brood of Adonis Blue butterflies before the heat built. I didn't see any Adonis but there were clouds of common blues, chalkhill blues, meadow brown, silver spotted skipper, argus brown etc (and my first clouded yellow of the year). I've never seen so many butterflies in all my life. It was wonderful up there early, with the whole reserve to myself. I was just about to photograph an impressive looking grasshopper, when it jumped away. Unfortunately for the grasshopper it jumped straight into the web of this magnificent female wasp spider. It was in the shade but fortunately I'd taken the macro lenses and tripod and was able to get some great record shots.

I'm still playing with my new extension tubes... If you saw my courtship spider video from a week or so ago then this is the same female. Others have mated and have egg sacs, but she's still single. Incidentally., the video may be shown on Springwatch on BBC on 28 May, subject to scheduling changes. This image was taken hand held again as I couldn't be bothered to get the tripod out. It should enlarge well if you're not arachnophobic ...Thanks for looking and for all the kind comments recently; I really must try and catch up with my commenting.

紫陽花 2009. #3

- View On Black -

After Jan's re-planting of our garden over the last year or so, we now have many more bee-friendly plants (mostly foxgloves), but the big hit with the bees at the moment seems to be Meadow Cranesbill.

P.S. I seem to have reached a period of photographic ennui, but I'll always enjoy shots like this - the fail rate can be daunting, but when they do work it's good :)

The leaves are pretty much gone now and everything is pretty dull-looking, except for one shrub I the yard. That shrub has, for some unknown reason, held on to date and has just recently taken on a beautiful burgundy tone with touches of orange. This will be the end of the colour in the yard until snow and co-operative lighting provides a whole new palette. - JW

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lense, ISO1000, Auto ISO, Auto WB Aperture priority mode, f/8.0, 1/160 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: resize image to 9000x6000, reduce exposure slightly, increase contrast slightly, boost black level just a little, boost vibrance, adjust colour balance to slightly warm the image, enable micro-contrast, apply noise reduction, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: modify the tone curve to a var slight 'Classic S' shape, slightly increase contrast, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000 (my preferred size for prepping an image to be used on-line), add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale to 1800 wide for posting.

A tasty breakfast for this spider

In the most coastal areas they are already in full bloom. At the end of January and the beginning of February, the almond trees dress up and give us authentic floral compositions.

Queensnake - Regina septemvittata

This section of the Eno River is a good place to find these, as their crayfish prey is abundant.

I paid dearly for this photo--wading through the river I slipped and came down hard on one knee, splitting it and requiring several stitches. I guess it was worth it!

Reprocessed version of an image posted back at the time. Some specular highlights in the background were blurred or cloned out. Happy Snake Week!
