Said to be the elephant's closest living relative (the elephant must not have any close relatives), these cat-sized things are found in Africa and the Middle East, and, according to the net: "early Phoenician navigators mistook the rabbits of the Iberian Peninsula for hyraxes (Hebrew Shaphan); hence they named it I-Shapan-im, meaning "land of the hyraxes", which became the Latin word "Hispania", the root of Spain's modern Spanish name España and the English name Spain..."
- For your inner zoologist: "The order first appears in the fossil record over 40 million years ago, and for millions of years they were the primary terrestrial herbivore in Africa. There were many species, the largest @ the weight of a small horse, the smallest the size of a hummingbird. In the Miocene, however, competition from the newly-developed bovids—very efficient grazers and browsers—pushed hyraxes out of the prime territory and into marginal niches... Some of the descendants of the giant hyracoids evolved to become smaller, and gave rise to the modern hyrax family. Others appear to have taken to the water, and ultimately gave rise to the elephant family, and perhaps also the Sirenians (dugongs and manatees). DNA evidence supports this theory, and modern hyraxes share features with elephants such as toenails, excellent hearing, sensitive pads on their feet, small tusks, good memory, high brain functions compared to other similar mammals, and the shape of some of their bones ... They retain a number of early mammal characteristics; e.g. they have poorly developed internal temperature regulation (which they deal with by huddling together for warmth, and by basking in the sun like reptiles)." I needed a pedestal to raise the table saw a few inches. The table saw was too low for me in any case, but it was especially important because it is my intention that every bench and work table I make for the shop will be at the same level as the top of the table saw, so it has to be a comfortable working height.
The extension table has a couple support legs with the adjusting feet seen at left. So with the table saw elevated on a pedestal, I'll replace the feet hardware with wooden risers. The risers have hanger bolts epoxied into them that will use the same threads in the extension legs as the adjusting feet.
The ones at right were the first set I made. I cut them from a milled 2x4 with the bolts inserted into the edge grain, but the resulting risers were too short. So I ripped the 2x4 and inserted the bolts into the end grain of slightly longer pieces (at center).
The bolts are not quite true. My 1940s era drill press spindle is still square to the table, but the wooden fence I made for it in 2015 is not exactly square, and I drilled the holes by holding the pieces firmly against the fence. I'll see how much this matters when I finally install the new feet between the legs and the floor. I need to make a new drill press table and fence soon anyway.
I have become almost addicted to the tidy little 45 degree edge chamfer I get from running the parts across my router. Makes everything look more finished.
As icebreaker at National Conference, each table of delegates wrote down what they had in common and took a table selfie.

Here is the first waterfall I came across during my 10 mile hike on top of Table Mountain. I think this one is called Beaston Falls.

This summer I got to work with Rock Paper Robot on their Float Table. Magnetized wooden cubes and steel cables hold the pieces together, and can support decorative items up to five pounds. This playful piece merges high design and classical physics.

As you can see, the view was amazing. In the distance "with the litle lights" you can see Saint Maxime and further, you can see ST. Tropez. Unfortunately it was onley for a week.
A run-through of my table for the first trunk show. I didn't realize how much stuff I had! It all worked okay, except the magnets are on a metal cookie sheet, which I couldn't really get to stand up very well.

The cross bearer had been fitted poorly so the table top wobbled. With it seated properly you can see the centre post is now protruding - this has to be shaved down flush so that the table top sits firmly on the bearer.
This is a benefit of not cleaning your kitchen table. Magical messy art. All-bran + coffee stain + bread-clip = I love you

During a break in the photo session with A. this afternoon (during what we will call a costume change) W. and I entertained ourselves with a rousing game of rock, paper, scissors.
I lied, we played no such game. However, we did take photos of this table top outside the leisure pool that has been beautifully damaged. Thanks to his employment history, W. was able to inform me that the gorgeous reflective surface of the table that I so admired was the result of black expoxy pool bottom paint (or something to that effect, that's what I heard anyhow). The collage effect was created by an action script that I found on the Adobe Studio Exchange. It's called The Big Picture.
We just got one of these table soccer (fusball for you educated folk) thingamabobs for the office. It's been getting quite a bit of use of late.
I was taking staff photos today for our new photoboard at work. Somehow, someone from work got onto my flickr page and nominated me. Whilst waiting for various people to arrive into the tea room, I fired off some bokehlicious snaps with the fiddy mill.
Of course I had to focus on the red guy, I mean, he does represent Liverpool. Here we go, here we go, here we go!!!!!
This is where lots of creative magic happens. I cut and iron my letters for my tees here. The table, fabric drawers and cool red ladder shelf are all from IKEA.
I've been too busy to get any outdoor shots lately. Tonight I just finished eating some wonderful pozole and took a picture of our ceramic table hot dish holder.
I've marked the center for the circle cutting jig. Measured diagonally and marked the center point and put a small finish nail in the center as a pivot.
Finished doing some surgery on a table for my sewing room/office/ guest bedroom.
