The effects of different reaction variables (initial concentration of cellulose, concentration of sulfuric acid, the duration and temperature of hydrolysis) in the sulfuric acid hydrolysis of different cellulose sources were evaluated for the purpose of optimizing nanocrystal length, aspect ratio, and yield. The resulting cellulose nanocrystals (CNs) were isolated and studied by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and atomic force microscope (AFM). The CNs synthesized by the optimized condition showed an aspect ratio of 20 with 200 to 500 nm in length, and 5 to 10 nm width.
