Abstract:
Wave Field Synthesis and Higher Order Ambisonics are both spatialisation techniques that could be applied to theatre sound design, but practicalities such as the number of loudspeakers and space required limit their use. Practical setups could consist of a planar array across the stage (for performer localisation) and surround speakers around the auditorium in different configurations (for ambience). This research simulates the use of extrapolated and truncated arrays, with HOA and WFS algorithms in order to create a panned frontal dominant system with potentially increased intelligibility due to source separation and spatial unmasking.
Bio:
Alexander Vilkaitis graduated from the University of Derby with a BSc 1st class honours degree in Sound, Light and Live Event Technology, before gaining a Merit at MSc level in Audio and Music Technology at the University of York. He is currently a PhD candidate at Derby under Dr Bruce Wiggins, researching spatial audio for theatre, with a focus on the creation, synthesis and analysis of spatial audio arrays. As a keen performer himself, he is interested in how sound can improve both audience and performer experiences in theatre.

Yamaha invented 'FM' synthesis, which involves multiple (2 or more) operators (oscillators) which can be arranged in a fashion which causes modulation to occur between operators. The first commercial synthesisers they produced were 2 operator synths. The classic DX7/TX7 synthesiser engines were 6 operator, allowing a variety of different operator layouts (including a "no FM" or "mix operators" layout). The prototype pictured in this photo taken by Aaron (tfinn) is a 4 operator model. The synth was tested and demoed by a bunch of players and then the synth itself (the rack) hacked at by Yamaha engineers.
