I would have framed the photo better, but timing it with the barge was very difficult to do not to mention a one time occurrence with only one chance to get it captured correctly. The barge was moving at a relatively fast pace (approximately 10 to 20 mph) down the Cumberland River (apparently called Barkley Lake at this juncture even though it's a massive flowing body of water snaking through the foothills of Tennessee and Kentucky).

While doing a study on the various colors I see for pain, I began to consider different situations in which I also 'feel' colors.

Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.
For me everything to do with 'monday' is red or purple or lilac.
I have made prints, paintings and drawings about my 'view and feelings' on monday.
This time I tried a composition in a box, it was not easy and I have to try again.

Synesthesie is een vermenging van de zintuigen. Hoewel het niet ongewoon is dat zintuigelijke waarnemingen onderlinge invloed hebben, is dit bij synesthesie dusdanig sterk dat bijvoorbeeld kleuren geproefd worden of geluiden gezien. Deze eigenschap van de hersenen komt bij relatief weinig mensen voor. Deze nemen meerdere soorten impulsen tegelijk waar, ook als die in feite in het algemeen door andere zintuigen worden gegenereerd.
Voor mij geldt;
1=wit, 2=grijsblauw, 3=zachtrood.
Alles wat tee maken heeft met 'maandag' is in mijn beleving, rood, paars of lila.
Ik heb prenten, schilderijen en tekeningen gemaakt over mijn beleving van de dagen van de week.
Dit keer probeerde ik een compositie in een kistje, het was niet gemakkelijk en ik moet het nog een keer proberen.

Wondering what a bear's roar looks like? Surprisingly, much different from what you might expect. There's a lot more brown in the actual vision than I've used in this piece, but the lion (which I'll upload later) is a bit more accurately portrayed.
This was inspired by my recent trip to the Winston Wildlife Safari in Oregon, where I watched two captive brown bears wrestling in their enclosure. I roared out the window at one of them, and instantly, they both looked up. A second later, one of them roared back. I was so stoked! I think my boyfriend was slightly unnerved that I was talking to bears, and my mom was prepared to roll up the window in the event that I accidentally invited them home with us.
In this work, I've used a combination of pen-and-ink drawing and encaustic wax. Most of the wavy affect was accomplished by use of a blow torch. Dark streaks in the lighter purple area are created by scraping away a thin layer of wax to expose what's underneath. All the splatter paint is done by slapping two paint brushes together, one which is loaded in hot wax. I've been stung by the heat many times, but only truely burned once. The other girl who shares the encaustic supplies with me (also an amazing artist!), thinks it's funny that I say 'OW!' and then laugh every time the wax splatters onto my arms. Aside from the pain, ENCAUSTIC IS SO MUCH FUN!
Expect to see a lot more of these coming soon. I've got a lion, and I plan to do a wolf and a peacock next. I'm also still taking commissions and always love a challenge, so please feel free to contact me with requests or questions!

The We are Here challenge on April 14 2017 was: Beauty in a Tragedy
Today's theme, Beauty in the midst of Tragedy was well chosen. Jo picked it because it is the anniversary of the Titanic disaster. It is also Good Friday this year.
Coincidentally, I had taken this book "For the End of Time" by Rebecca Rishkin, on my business trip. (I bought it years ago and never started reading it.) So I immediately thought of the Messaien Quartet for the End of Time. Several interesting things about this marvelous and miraculous 20th century masterpiece:
- Messiaen composed it while a prisoner of war of Germany during 1940 to 1941.
- The origins of the instrumentation may have been partly due to the musicians who were also in the camp at the time: Etienne Pasquier (cellist, with a suitably Easter-y last name), Jean Le Boulaire (violinist, and also known as Jean Lanier who appeared in Les Enfants du Paradis among other films), and Henri Akoka (clarinet, and an Algerian Jew who managed to escape several times from the camps).
- Messiaen's subject matter for this work was the Revelation of St. John, chapter 10. In the midst of the war and prison camps, Messiaen chose to focus on eternity and immortality. Messiaen was very religious - almost all of his works have a religious and especially a Catholic basis.
- In addition to the angels of the apocalypse, Messiaen's themes and driving forces were: (a) bird songs (especially the clarinet, but also in the violins), (b) rhythm - the work uses very complex rhythms and patters based partly on ancient Greek and Hindu music. Time itself is a factor in Messiaen's tempos which are outlandishly slow, conveying a sense of eternity, and (c) color, especially aural colors (i.e., synesthesia).
- The premiere of the work was on 15 January 1941. The performance was held in a barracks-theater at the prison camp, and attended by hundreds of prisoners, guards and administrators. The conditions in the camp were not wonderful, but they were lucky to be in one of the Nazis' "show camps" that were used to present a better face on Germany's war programs and to hide the real death camps from world view.
- Messiaen and Pasquier were released from imprisonment several months after the premiere. They returned to occupied France and managed to survive the rest of the war.
Quartet for the End of Time is a beautiful piece of music - if you haven't heard it, I highly recommend it. If you know and like the work, you might be interested in Rebecca Rishkin's history of its composition and legacy. Here is a link to a good documentary as well: Quartet for the End of Time
