Paul Gauguin -
Contes barbares [1902] -

Gauguin's Contes Barbares depicts a man in a missionary dress crouching behind two barely clad figures in a post-lapsarian paradise heady with scents and textures. This demonic persona stems from the 1889 Portrait of Meijer de Haan, whom Gauguin transformed into an icon of the artist as maverick sage, conflating Milton's Paradise Lost with Carlyle's Sartor Resartus. The artist as prophet defies convention through Baudelaire's notion of "barbare", denoting a schematic language by which synesthesia gives art meaning. Long hailed as an inspiration for the mystical concept of synesthesia, Baudelaire's poem "Correspondences" provided Gauguin with a paradigm for his belief in art as revelation. The parable encoded in Contes Barbares aligns the fate of the dying Oceania with Gauguin's own imminent death; it transcends surface reality not only to enable the audience to experience the realm of truth behind appearances, but ultimately to proclaim that this is the very mission of art.

An artistic rendition of my synesthesia colors, represented in the form of a clock.
I feel the need to share a bit of information regarding the number 1, since I'm not sure if this is normal for synesthetes or not. Simply put, 1 on its own is pure white on a black background, but when placed with any other number, it turns black. The exception is number 11, which is gray, as seen in the picture. I've heard of this happening before, but I've never been quite sure as to why. Granted, not much about synesthesia is known, even to modern scientists, but just in case this happens to anyone else affected with the condition, I'd like to know...
As usual, all works are for sale. But this is one for my AP art concentration, so if you're interested in this painting, you'll need to wait until the end of the school year. Sorry.

Since I'm not a fan of Coldplay, and would rather listen to the raw talent that is A Capella, I present to you another synesthesia painting; this time, to the colors of Viva La Vida as performed by the greatly-gifted University of Buffalo A Capella choir.
For those of you unfamiliar with synethesia, a definition nabbed from the medical dictionary online:
"A condition in which normally separate senses are not separate. Sight may mingle with sound, taste with touch, etc. The senses are cross-wired. For example, when a digit-color synesthete sees or just thinks of a number, the number appears with a color film over it. A given number's color never changes; it appears every time with the number. Synesthesia can take many forms. A synesthete may sense the taste of chicken as a pointed object. Other synesthetes hear colors. Still others may have several senses cross-wired.
Estimates of the frequency of synesthesia range from 1 in 250,000 to 1 in 2,000. People with synesthesia are 6 times more likely to be female than male. Most synesthetes find their unusual sensory abilities enjoyable.
People with synesthesia often report that one or more of their family members also have synesthesia, so it may in at least some cases be an inherited condition.
It may be that synesthesia arises when particular senses fail to become fully independent of one another during normal development. According to this school of thought, all babies are synesthetes. Synesthesia can be induced by certain hallucinogenic drugs and can also occur in some types of seizure disorders."

Synesthesia Art:
Encaustic (resin, wax, various pigments) on posterboard. Color and motion inspired by my actual synesthesia visions of the song, which I played over and over again while painting this.
I've worked with encaustic in the past, but didn't have access to these materials while in Cayman. So this is the first time in over a year that I've been working with them again, and I find that it's a bit like riding a bike...except that with encaustic, you've got high-powered hand-held propane blow torches to worry about instead of peddles. Nonetheless, I jumped right back into the swing of things and am very pleased with the outcome.
"Goobye Blue Sky" is a song I'd only heard a few times prior Coalburn's commission, and is probably not one of Pink Floyd's most famous, despite appearing on one of their most popular albums, The Wall.
Vocals range in the teal, blue, and gray-green, while guitar is (as usual) red, orange, and occasionally yellow for the 'twangier' bits. There's also an unusual grayish-silver haze in the background (which is an undertone that's supposed to sound like war planes or something), that actually worked out perfectly with the encaustic medium due to my ability to apply 3-D layers of wax down, which I cannot do with acrylic.
I should start a "girls with flamethrowers" club. All the encaustic artists I've ever met or worked with have been girls. ;)

“Synesthesia” is when the stimulation of one sensory system leads to an experience in another system. For example, you see colors when you hear music. Or a texture triggers a taste in your mouth. Reports of synesthesia are common when using psychedelic drugs, but it also occurs naturally in people known as “synesthetes.”
Although the phenomenon seems unusual, some researchers believe it reveals the potential of the mind to process any particular sensation in a variety of ways. In fact, researchers who study mental imagery don’t apply the term “image” to only visual experiences inside one’s mind, but also to sounds, smells, tastes, and body sensations within one’s imagination. Their research reveals how one type of mental image often can trigger another.
Many artists often talk about their work in a synesthetic way. My piano teacher, for example, mentioned the colors he associated with different notes and key signatures, sometimes colors with flavor qualities, like “coffee.” Visual artists also use words related to sounds, textures, and body sensations to describe their work.
Sometimes the influence of these sensations on the creative process is unconscious. There is the story of the photographer who noticed a pattern surfacing in his images: a visual repetition of three elements in a row, followed by a forth falling distinctly below the other three. After wondering why he was favoring such compositions, he suddenly realized that he had been listening to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. The four ominous notes of Fate knocking on one’s door had been shaping his visual experience, without his even realizing it.
Perhaps there’s a lesson to be learned from synesthesia. To improve our photography, we might think about the visual experience as more than what we see. If we develop the awareness of our ears, nose, tongue, and fingertips, it may enrich the awareness of our eyes. How might a sound, smell, taste, and body sensation translate into something visual? Maybe playing an instrument, sipping wine, and doing yoga are all opportunities to better understand photography.
So why not wiggle your fingers through a bowl of water, drop a handful of spoons into the sink, or roll a crumpled up ball of newspaper along your arm. If someone asks what you’re doing, say, “photography.”

A very small ornament affixed to an inconspicuous corner of an ordinary fixture of beams and bars that architecturally compose just a small part of a relatively standard staircase on a relatively medianal residence lies a larger scale tale of mystical mysteriousness moving about the lovely lines of such sacred silkiness.
What seemed like complete obscurity inevitably could not hide the precious real estate from natural narration for very long at all. Innately and effortlessly, by exposing the corner block to the elemental terrestriality and earthen evolutionaries, nature's ability to decorate, reclaim, and renovate the inconceivably, absolutely arbitrary always has and always will become an elegant elaboration.
