Daniel Tammet is a savant with synesthesia, an unusual crosstalk in the mind.
Like Shakespeare or Nobokov weaving evocative metaphor from cognitive associations, Daniel can navigate numbers and language with amazing power.
On a dare, he taught himself the Icelandic language in a week.
And he recited 22,514 digits of Pi, which is like memorizing a random string of digits for most people.
He’s the one I wanted to speak with at the party... =)
And it got even more interesting, moonwalking with Einstein.
Seeing my last name, he praised the beauty of the vowel-rich Estonian language. He did not like the associations of his birth name (Corney) and so he changed it to Tammet, which means "tree" in Estonian. This fit better with the way he sees himself.
For Tammet, each integer up to 10,000 has a unique shape, colour, texture and feel. He can see the results of calculations as landscapes and can sense whether a number is prime. 25 is energetic, the "kind of number you would invite to a party." (examples below)
Memorizing Pi was like walking through a 3D tapestry of colors and shapes, a “rolling numerical landscape.” He told my Dad that it would be like a mental stroll through his garden. It is not that hard to remember what you see. And yes, it’s just as easy to walk the other way. So he could recite Pi in reverse as well.
Pi is beautiful to him, and so he can instantly spot a single flipped digit across thousands as an ugly scar in his beautiful landscape.
When he recited Pi to over 22 thousand digits, it took a bit over five hours, and he says he was limited by fatigue not memory capacity. The organizers of the event were most impressed by his ability to stop for a drink of water at every 1000 digits without being told the time had come.
While numbers have color and shape, words have color and emotion. So he does not form the same landscapes with text, but he does have a more evocative experience with certain strings of words. “Nabokov was synaesthetic!” he exclaims. Tammet sees harmonious colors in his writings, like a string of purple words with melancholy associations.
He was familiar with Ramachandran’s work studying synesthesia: “The brain did not evolve to represent numbers, but it did evolve to represent space. Cardinality maps onto space.”
I was reminded of my first reaction to meeting Ramachandran:
The mastery of evocative metaphor, in written or visual form, seems like a touch of synaesthesia to me. Great artists can tap into their internal cross talk, and synaesthesia is the extreme example of what might lie along a spectrum from rationalist to artiste.
It also seems that young children are better at this than the average adult. Given the 10x reduction in synaptic connections at the age of 2 to 3 years, perhaps the benefits of crosstalk are lost in the carvings of maturity.

Finally got around to making a chart of my synesthesia colors. I had done one a while ago when I first learned that I had the condition, but this one is more accurate.
My colors are generally pretty warm, I guess, and I see a lot of reds and other earthy tones. X, K, Y, and A have the strongest colors for me, which override my perception of the letters nearby. That said, the color for U (though apparently much duller than the aforementioned) is also very strong.
S is a bit of a strange one, because if it is by itself, at the end of a word, or in the middle of a word, it is actually more similar in color to A (sort of a rusty red without so much orange). In these cases when it's red, it is a strong, confident, and supporting.
But when it is at the start of a word, it looks pale blue as pictured. This has always bothered me, because my name, Sarah, starts with an S so the whole name is a pale blue color. I perceive the color as weak, pathetic, and easy to give in to demands. It's completely the opposite of my personality. So in other words, I hate my name because it starts with an S.

Another synesthetic view of music. This time, 'Status' by RX Bandits. I really like the message of the song, but mostly, I like the simplicity and up-beat tempo.
Note: The color is a little off on this. The yellow is brighter, and there is a bit of white in here.
Original works this size (roughly 16X10) go for $100.00, thanks to much poking and prodding from this guy. Will happily take commissions for certain songs and the like. Synesthesia art is increasingly rare, and a good investment for art collectors.

Did this as a commission for a friend of mine who used to run my favorite house venue, The Coop. This piece is done on a 3 by 2 foot piece of recycled wood in acrylic and spray paint.
The request was for the Clash's entire self-titled album, but specifically the song "Spanish Bombs". I ended up focusing on guitar and vocals mainly, as most precussion registers in the browns, tans, grays, and dark oranges and don't really fit in well with other colors. A lot of the guitar parts are meduim-range (at least for most of their songs) and come off as a bright orange-red with jagged edges, while lower notes on electric guitar and bass are what I call 'stright-up' blue. Even lower notes are dark, dark red and highest notes are pings and streaks of lime green and yellow.
On "Spanish Bombs," the lead singer's voice is a comfortable shade of light grayish blue. It doesn't fan out too much and seems to stay in a pretty compact space in my head (usually slightly off to the left, with the guitar taking up the most of the center and the bass catching the edges).
Seeing color in a three-dimesional space around my head made painting such a large canvas challenging but fun. And I was totally covered in paint by the end of the days that I worked on it. In all, this took about 9 or 10 hours of work and I'm quite satisfied with the result...though I'm not sure I'm up for doing entire albums again anytime soon, as it's quite a work out!
Nevertheless, I'm still open for commissions and whatnot. Pieces can be just about any size you chose and I'll do any song you wish to 'see'. But please have the dignity to avoid requesting really crappy girly music and trance-techno, as I DO listen to the songs over and over again while I work.

With a silhouette and simple colour outlines other ideas and / or sensations can be generated regarding to the image.

Synesthesia in art:
Sometimes defined as the simultaneous perception of multiple stimuli in one gestalt experience.
This ring has been nothing less than 'synesthetic' to me from it's very inception. When I looked at a piece of brass wire I had just hammered and worked into whimsical curves, I heard jazz (in my imagination, anyway).
A magenta square from a recycled vintage earring with scroll-like flourishes, burgundy Swarovski Crystals, and a tear-shaped freshwater pearl, scatter all over the curved brass wire like bursts of jubilant noise.
This ring is a size 6.

All goodness that's growing is green, but yet most that grows green isn't goodness even though green is mostly what grows when it is seemingly green that is all that grows. So, growing is mostly green, but green is all that is growing.

For my Fine Arts Digital Imaging Final we had to have three things 1. And Ebook (A collection of 20 photos we were assigned as homework) 2. 20 photos from class/homework printed (15 8x10 and 5 11x17 or larger) and 3. A Self Directed Book.
For my book I was inspired by my good friend Christoper Noyes, who is a Synesthete. A synesthete is someone with Synesthesia (which may sound like a no brainer). I always loved to hear him talk about his Synesthesia and how bizarre it was to him that I didn't see or hear things the way he did. He's sees music notes as colors and is a wonderful musician who can play anything. Even if it's not an instrument, if he can get his hands on it he can make melodies with it.
So after sitting down and talking to him I did a little research and created my own interpretations of the way he sees numbers. I asked him what colors each were and went from there. I wanted to portray a sort of geometry meets grace. I finished the book and sent it out for printing tonight 13x11 Landscape book $90.23. It will arrive in the mail May 7th, one day before it is due. I'm pretty happy with the end result and hope my class enjoys it.
