I've never seen one in the box.

This is the hallway switchplate in my parents' house. Apparently the people who lived there before loved Asian architecture and design - and bamboo! On their front porch is a wooden planter with a ton of bamboo growing... the wallpaper in their entry is textured and made of bamboo, they have japanese bamboo paper sliding doors in their bedroom, this bamboo-design switchplate in the hallway... bamboo bamboo bamboo!

Single lightswitch & Standard Outlet (sized 2 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches)

Skulls close up. Has a funky blurry/antique-y look I quite like.

The story is that I needed some kind of decorative house-warming gift for Goth friends of friends (the invitation said "Bring something morbid and arty to decorate with"). I though I'd get some plastic switch plates (cheap! 22c!) and decorate them with skulls or gothic-font writing, using a sharpie. I googled for images and fonts but quickly decided the sharpie would look like crap. I toyed with the idea of cutting stencils and painting, but I'm lazy, and that's a lot of work (I know from some glass-etching I did a while ago). Then I remembered some t-shirts Kathy & I had made using iron-on laser printer paper! It turned out we still had some, so I tried it. Tricky, but as you can see it worked. The plates didn't melt, but the images certainly aren't crisp. I decided that was a good thing.

After ironing the image on (it uses some kind of waxy substance) I sealed them with several coatings of spray-on clear polyurethane.

This is probably the best of the set.

Almost done with switcheplates for daughter....think I have 5 more to go...these go in her kitchen/family room area.

This lonely, beaten up muzak dial is hidden away in the break room, behind the microwaves and refrigerators. I didn't look *too* closely, but I highly doubt this dial goes up to 11.

Made by me. Not new, but posted to inspire me to get back to work in the skull bathroom. Gotta do this baby justice!

A multi-tasker that seems like a good idea (although we have never actually used it), the head of this screw is a magnet.

Taken for Flickr's Our Daily Challenge: ELECTROMAGNETISM (although this is a simple magnet, not an electromagnet.)

Sitting, rocking on the porch, her eye happened to fall upon an electrical plug-in plate set into the baseboard. Probably so folks could come out here in the summertime and listen to the radio or even have the baseball on that cute little round TV. Nothing in the whole country more common than those little wall-plates with the prong-slits in them. She’d even had them back in her squatter’s shack in Hemingford. You didn’t think nothing of those plates… unless they didn’t work anymore. Then you realized that one hell of a lot of a person’s life came out of them. All that spare time, that pleasure which the long-ago Don King had extolled her on… it came out of those switchplates set into the wall. With their potency taken away, you might as well use all those gadgets like the microwave oven and the ‘trash masher’ to hang your hat and coat on. (Stephen King, The Stand 640)

The world relies on electricity. Everything needs electricity to function. When the power goes out, our lives are put on hold. We need electricity. Strip us of this dangerous discovery and society would be in shambles.

This project illustrates how our lives are ruled by electricity. I use dramatic lighting and contrast to set a sense of urgency. The photos are slightly unnerving. The light beckons to the viewer, calling him/her closer, only to establish its power over society.

Organizing.

These are the spare switch-plate and outlet covers for our home. We have a lot of extras. Unfortunately, we are missing the elusive 3 switch platecover. Ours broke and we can't seem to find another.

Switch plate covered with polymer clay using Tonja Linderman's scrap mokume gane technique.

Polymer clay switchplate cover to match my new "Chocolate Pear" kitchen cabinets. I carved the diamond "tile" pattern into raw cay and added a deep brown frame using a flat stamp that I gave dimension through a combination of carving and sculpting. The finished product looks like antiqued leather.

Another batch of switchplates that are now in one of the local stores where I sell some of my mosaics.

Great for parties, baby showers, bridal showers, weddings, etc...
