This is the Brocade 200E fibre channel switch. They're a quite a few thousand dollars, so unfortunately we've only got one. The infrastructure would take another one quite easily, but that will have to be in the future

This rebuilt BNSF engine shuffles cars around at Council Bluffs, interchanging cars with the Iowa Interstate on 8-21-18.
These are parts of the switch control system for the little hump yard in Springfield yard. I assume they're relays for all of the switches than can be thrown by the operator in the hump tower.
I wish I had a switch like this so I can turn myself on and off whenever I need to do so.

Forty years ago, in the late 60s, I lived here at the Harcourt. In those days it was a "residence club," an old hotel run like a boarding house -- you got a room (sometimes with a roommate you didn't know), breakfast and supper (except on Sundays), and a bathroom and shower down the hall (which you shared with the residents of a dozen or so other rooms). There was a patio up on the roof where you could socialize and get a tan (a wooden fence blocked the wind).
During one of my stays here (there were several) I think I lived in the room that's noted in this shot. I was in it for three weeks and each week had a different roommate. The first was a conservative evangelical theology student from Oklahoma. The second was a gay bellhop at the Mark Hopkins Hotel (he asked if I was "happy"). And the third was a guy who was driving a junk car from Florida to Alaska. He stopped in various towns along the way -- San Francisco being one of them -- to earn just enough money for food and gas and to be able to move on. At the end of those three weeks I moved on, too, switching to a single room -- no more roommates! -- because one was finally available and/or I could afford it.
I heard about the Harcourt from a driver on the "F" bus coming back from Berkeley (I was a grad student at the University of California). I was his only passenger. When I told him I'd only been in for San Francisco two days, he asked where I was staying. At the time it was the YMCA on Golden Gate Avenue, where Travelers' Aid (at the airport) had directed me. He said I should try the Harcourt. "Keg parties in the dining room," he said, "and people running bare-ass up and down the stairs." So why did he leave? "My girlfriend got pregnant and we had to get married." With that word of caution, I moved in. It was just as he said -- with one exception. Nobody ever threw a keg party while I was there.
Now it's a hotel again. There's no dining room and the neighborhood looks crappier than I remember it. On the other hand, when a girl from Boston came to visit me here, she stayed only a night and then moved out: "How can you stay in that pit?" she asked.
I'm modifying a few switches for remote operations, starting with the ones that are damaged or "sticky". An interesting design element seen in the toggle arm (that long skinny piece) is that oval cutout that allows plastic to flex inwards and outwards. On the outside of that cutout there are/were locking tabs that would hold the arm in one of two positions. With those tabs removed, I should be able to motorize these switches with either Lego motors, or Arduino servos... Possibly even with HO scale switch motors!

Double slip switch (X-switch) in detail:
You can exchange two normal switches for one X-switch, and this way you can save 27 studs in track length. The geometry of the X-switches are following the normal switch geometry, so a14 and a8 are useful here as well. Unfortunately the diagonal length of this switch is smaller so two different X-switches are needed. Changing the diagonal length would make bigger problems, like losing the 16 studs module in line distance.

With Indian-owned Ashok Leyland consulting on the closure of Switch Mobility's Sherburn-in-Elmet plant, will this see the end of diesel-engine Solo availability in the UK ?
Production had been paused but resumed in 2023 with a 60 vehicle order from Stagecoach, which subsequently increased to 118. This enabled other operators to also place 'add on' orders for small numbers.
Carmarthen-based Morris Travel has been a beneficiary and has recently received four - two 28-seat 8.57m examples and two 30-seat 9.26m examples - registered YJ25 EHB-E. These are the company's first new Solos since four were received in 2009.
YJ25 EHE represents the batch and is seen on Coracle Way in Carmarthen in May 2025 when arriving on Carmarthenshire CC-contracted Service 460 (Cardigan-Newcastle Emlyn-Cynwyl Elfed-Carmarthen). This is a joint operation with Richards Bros, who have two vehicle diagrams whilst Morris has one.
The grandiosly titled Empire State Railway Museum at Phoenicia, NY on 10 September 2017, the remnant of the tourist Catskill Mountain Railroad (CMRR).
A pair of four axle switchers, on the left is CMRR 29 an ex U.S. Navy 50 tonner, and on the right; an old GE 45 tonner as yet to be restored. The track in the foreground appeared to be part of the old railroad but the exhibits were just placed on track that had been laid directly on the ground to display/store them.
