I lost my Swiss Army Explorer knife when I went to London recently. I think it probably fell out of my pocket when I was sitting in an arm chair at a café in Upper Street Islington. I've started to carry this much larger SAK Champ which I bought in a sale a long time ago. The Champ is rather weighty but it saves buying another one. Yesterday, I bought the little screwdriver, which fits in the corkscrew, for £2.

I took this photo with both my iPhone 6 (1/3" sensor) and my Ricoh GR4 (1/1.7" sensor). Sadly, for colour and general appearance, I prefer the iPhone photo.

On the train home I cut up and ate an apple.

Cutting has been chosen as today's topic for the Our Daily Challenge group.

My idea of what a real geek Swiss army knife should look like. Because let's be honest; R2D2 is the ultimate Swiss army knife. Modeled in 3DS Max and rendered with VRAY.

Some of the holes in one of the lined pages in my Pocket Filofax had torn so I mended them with reinforced adhesive tape. I'm just punching a hole in the tape. These non-standard pages have been cut from an old unused "day to a page" diary.

My paper aeroplane calendar is great - it was a Christmas present. I have made each day's aeroplane using plain paper to keep the instructions; one is supposed to make each day's 'plane using the previous day's paper. I've just started to make them with A4 paper rather than A5. Today's aeroplane was made with rather thicker paper than the others (I did try airmail paper for one glider)

Whatever the reason - I suspect it's the design - today's is the best flyer so far … thank you Julia and Lloyd :)

A notice was tied to this tree some time ago and has gone but the nylon string has not. It's very tight and one can just see that the tree is growing over it. The ever-handy Swiss Army Knife came to the rescue.

Recently I bought this second-hand book: Poems and Ballads by Arthur Quiller-Couch published in 1896. At the back, some of the pages advertising other books, have remained unopened.

Should I cut them open?

This was the gear that evolved to be the standard carry for a recent trip to Transylvania. The climate was mixed bright sunshine and rain with an average temperature of between 18c to 24c.

The Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack was new just before I left the UK but I had walked it in enough to be confident that it would be a useful alternative to my 511 Rush 24 when I didn't need to carry as much stuff.

With all of this in it space was a little tight but after a few days of arranging and rearranging I found the correct place for everything.

After the rain there were several worms on the asphalt path where they would die, so, taking my trusty Swiss Army Knife, I slipped the blade under them and flipped them onto the grass where they would stand a chance of surviving.

I bought this Wenger Swiss Army Knife recently, it's second-hand but little used. I thought I'd keep it in reserve until I lose my yellow Victorinox Explorer, which I'm sure to do sometime as I've lost a good many knives over the years.

These Wenger knives are not made anymore, unlike the Victorinox version, they have a nail file instead of a second blade. This one has a saw but not a corkscrew and it has this unusual magnifying glass.

Wenger make the genuine SAK whereas Victorinox make the original SAK. When the Swiss government wanted a knife for soldiers towards the end of the 19th Century they gave a contract to each firm.

The gnomon is missing from this sundial, it can't have been gone very long as there is a photo of it in the guide book to the house. I improvised with my Swiss Army Knife. My shadow is on the left holding my iPhone.

The exif information shows that I took this photograph just before half past three in the afternoon BST - but the sundial is set to GMT :)

Swiss precision at its best.

A close up of my SAK Explorer – I carry this in my pocket all the time. It comes in handy so often. The little screwdriver that fits into the corkscrew is ingenious. Looking at this photo I realised that the pin is missing so I've replaced it.

As I was walking along I saw a worm stranded on the pavement so I put the blade of my penknife under it and flipped it onto the grass.

People sometimes ask me what I use my pocket knife for … this is one use.

As title really, this is my Swiss Army Knife , which is extremely useful and with me everyday, I struggle without it !

A few spare pocket knives:

A Swiss Army Champ, a Swiss Army golfers' knife, a knife with spoon & fork attachment, my Father's penknife and an Army jack knife.

The Our Daily Challenge group has chosen Weekend project as today's topic.

I finished the last of the port yesterday evening with some Stilton & biscuits so I have to open another bottle for the weekend 😀

I met this young man at the Farmer's Market in Summerside during the first Saturday market of 2025. He's an engineering student at the University of PEI and sharpens knives on the weekends to cover some of his expenses. I had my venerable Swiss Army Knife with me, of course. I've carried it everyday on my belt since the late 1980's so it's seen some very good use. Getting it sharpened seemed a worthwhile investment, especially since I was helping out a student and getting a photo as part of the deal. In the end, I got a very keen edge on my old knife for seven bucks, a story, and a photo. Not a bad deal at all.

I ordered a new bottle of sepia ink as the bottle I got two years ago (see here) is nearly finished.

Victorinox Ambassador Swiss Army Knife (left) and Victorinox Electrician Swiss Army Knife (right).

I'm actually finding the handy and versatile Ambassador model to be more useful during my wiring project. The scissors are perfect for stripping wire. In fact, the simple little Ambassador is a great all-around tool, and is the model I've been favoring for years.

The Electrician features the metal "alox" textured handle, making this a sturdy-feeling tool with a pleasingly tactile, comfortable grip.

I thought my bicycle tyres needed inflating but when I attached the pump the air hissed out 😟

I found that the rubber tube of the pump had split at the top. I cut it off, removed the damaged piece and re-connected the tube.

I took the photo afterwards holding my knife and the short piece of split tube.

I was given a paper aeroplane folding calendar* for Christmas. Thanks so much, I have made paper aeroplanes for as long as I can remember. We flew big ones out of upstairs windows when I was teaching - the children loved it. It's good to have so many new designs to try out. One is supposed to fold them on the paper of the calendar - but I want to keep the instructions so I'm folding them on plain paper. I might decorate them later. Yesterday's 'plane is on the left, today I'm using airmail paper. The double-sided sticky tape is an addition to keep the 'planes folded in flight. They go pretty well 😃

Strobist info: The key lights are two AlienBees B400s, symmetrical and obliquely angled to subject, on the left and right. The lights are modified with 7" reflectors, and to large gobos on the back side to keep light from spilling onto the black backdrop about 5'/2.5m behind the subject. The lights are triggered with a sync cable. Additional control of unwanted reflections was achieved with a polarizing filter and handheld gobos in the path of direct reflections on the metal surfaces.

I bought this Wenger knife on eBay as a spare for when I lose my current pocket knife, a Victorinox Explorer. I lose pocket knives every few years so I'm bound to need this one sometime soon.

Wenger advertised their knives as the Genuine Swiss Army Knife, Victorinox called their knives the Original Swiss Army Knife. Both companies had received a contract from the Swiss government to supply knives to the Swiss Army.

Even more than my Leatherman Juice A2. Even has a small screwdriver wound into the corkscrew. Very difficult to open all the tools at once. Need to use the screwdriver from the #Alox7 to avoid breaking a thumbnail…

Not many medium to large knives have the file but this one does.

The nearest model with file with these features, plus a hook, is the Mountaineer, B-1.3743 which I added to my collection on my Victorinox Account.

Reading my book, "A Passionate Prodigality" by Guy Chapman, this morning, while eating my breakfast porridge, I found that a previous owner had creased the corner of the page - presumably to mark the place, what a dreadful thing to do. It was so firmly creased that I had to slip the point of my penknife blade under it to rectify the matter.

Paper promotion package for Mohawk Fine Papers Options line. The paper is solid and versatile, which solves printing needs whatever they may be, sort of like having the right tool for the job. This inspired me to create a fun promotion package based on a Swiss army knife. It folds out to be able to show the different types of paper, and then folds back into the center for storage and protection.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and have a blessed New Year.

So I am leaving for Europe this Sunday! This is what I'll have with my for the next 4 months.

I have always been very fond of Victorinox Alox knives, equally due to their good looks and sturdiness.
