Swift Miss, an ex-racehorse, whose aquaintance I made while walking down a country lane.
Possibly a mixture of White Throated Needletails and Fork Tailed Swifts. All flocked together and flying ahead of an approaching storm front. I don't have time to count them yet. From Maramingo Fire Lookout Tower.
Swift Parrots are endangered in all states and nationally; it's estimated there are around 1000 breeding pairs remaining with no sign of recovery in numbers yet. They migrate from their breeding grounds in Tasmania to the mainland each year and some pass Canberra around May and September. Sometimes we manage to see them here if they decide to use the suburbs as a staging post, tending to hang around feeding for a week or two in the same area before resuming their journey.
It will be interesting to see if the excellent rainfall in the last year leads to an increase in numbers.
This bunch were noticed by Matthew in the ironbarks planted in urban carparks at Tuggeranong. I finally got to catch up with them 10 days later -- this day there were only moulting immature birds to be seen. This is one, beautiful of course but not the most photogenic at this moulting stage. Notice the claw on the leaf, I saw some hanging only by leaves.

Black Swifts are very enigmatic birds. They were one of the last North American birds to be discovered and described by science, and for years virtually nothing was know of them. They are mostly found in high mountains,where they nest behind or in the spray of waterfalls,although they have also been found nesting in damp caves and along coastal cliffs in the spray of the surf. It is only this past year that their wintering grounds have been discovered,in the western Amazon.In Utah there are only a few known nest sites,all at waterfalls near Provo canyon in the wasatch range,although there is one report of a nest in Zion National Park,but its exact location is not known,and a few other unverified reports elsewhere in the state. This would be the only known nest site in the Uinta mountains,although the fact is there are many waterfalls there deep in the wilderness that could have other colonies.
