Possibly a mixture of White Throated Needletails and Fork Tailed Swifts. All flocked together and flying ahead of an approaching storm front. I don't have time to count them yet. From Maramingo Fire Lookout Tower.
After a strong rainstorm passed through, a large group of swifts gathered, circling over the valley. There were at least four species, maybe more. It's so hard to identify some of the medium-sized swifts -- they are nearly identical! After watching closely on a couple of low passes, I felt fairly good about the identity of this one, so I tried for a photo. Seeing the photo put me at ease. Aug 1: Just as our lovely swifts are about to depart, I've finally completed this collage which aims to celebrate these super "black arrows" which do so much to brighten our skies in summer. Inspired by their arrival in Bungay, back in May, I was so drawn to these amazing creatures that I created a linocut featuring 3 swifts. The idea for this collage came on a later mixed media workshop with my inspiring art teacher Michele. And this is the result...the background consists of a page taken from an old map, swift silhouettes cut out from card, painted shadows, watercolour and wax crayons applied to greaseproof paper and fine cotton webbing to add texture. A laquered door from an old Chinese cabinet is currently acting as an interesting frame! Will be very sad to see the swifts depart but at least I'll have this to remember them by...
A 1946 Swift parked at Westheimer Field in Norman, OK. Swifts were manufactured 1946-51. Designed to appeal to the veteran pilots of WWII, they were tail-draggers featuring low wings and retractable gear.
RAW, PS Elements.
I have taken hundreds, maybe thousands of pictures of swifts, mostly without success. But yesterday I spend I good deal of time reading up on camera settings, watching YouTube videos about photographing birds in flight. Well, I think this is the best I've yet managed of one.
