A huge bee swarm going into a hive in our back yard.
One of the main reasons for bees swarming is overcrowding of the hive due to the queen laying more eggs thanks to warm weather and an increase of flowers and pollen. Honey bees are the only type of bees that swarm.
Alan said: Swarming is nature's way of making a perfect "split" (making two colonies from one).
Have a lovely Friday
Birds circling a boat in San Francisco bay
This one is a continuation of the previous photoshoot, taken a little while later. Still an amazing day to shoot, but in a decidedly different way.
Today, at the Kingsburg Historical Park, we hosted the Amani Children's Choir, from Uganda. These kids were such great ambassadors for their country. Granted that they are a religious group, and I think you all know what I think about religion. But they were just some really nice kids and pleasure to be around.
Hubby brought back two empty bee boxes yesterday and today a swarm from a hive around the corner, is moving in ! A bit of good luck, they could have flown away.
Though there are some that might question my judgement when I get close to moose, elk or bears. I do so because I have a lot of experience around them and have learned to read their behavior pretty well, along with any warning signs that they want me to back off. But several years ago when we came upon this swarm of bees, I was out of my element. Can't tell when their ears go back or the hair on their neck is raised. They don't paw the ground or pop their jaws when they feel threatened.
So, took about 3 shots of this swarm at full 400mm and then quickly moved on.
Found them at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Colorado.
Due to the recent rain's in North Central Illinois the mosquito population is out of control the buzzing sound was almost as loud as the locomotives. IR 107 head's eastbound through Serena, IL on it's way to BNSF Ebola Yard.
A picture of something we didn't see today here in northern Illinois-snow.Instead we enjoyed a warm, foggy, and rain-filled Christmas. Not very pretty, but less stressful driving to Grandma's house for sure...
HSS everyone and hoping you all had a great(and more photogenic!) Christmas!
House hunting time! How can a bunch of tiny-brained bees, hanging from tree branch, make such a complex decision and make it well?
The original photo was of a wintery Sheboygan lighthouse. Photoleap was used to add elements of other photos that I have taken.
Note: The swarming of the winged frogs happens much less frequently than the swarming of the locusts.

Honey bee swarm showing waggle dance. This swarm was arranged on a pear tree at Copped Hall in the walled garden and had been forming for 3 days. Just after I had taken pictures our bee keeper arrived to knock them into a box for transportation to one of our hives - we already have 2 active.
Sorry it's a bit shaky but I didn't have a tripod with me and had to hand-hold.
I thought this is a nice scenery. This photo was taken in the new "Tropen Aquarium" of the Hagenbecks Tierpark in Hamburg, Germany. I improved contrasts a little with Gimp as it was taken in a aquarium behind a huge glass front. Geo tags will follow...
