Artist's Statement:

I stole these yellow ribbon magnets from the backs of vehicles in parking lots across Phoenix, AZ, where they are plentiful. I found an unsurprising correlation between the size of the vehicle and the number of ribbons on the bumper. While I believe theft is wrong, I believe the advocation of state-sanctioned violence is much worse. After scanning these magnets, many of them very decayed, I destroy them.

Some may say that supporting the troops is not the same as supporting war. This is very wrongful thinking to me. I have met many soldiers in my lifetime and they are generally decent people, but there is not a draft in America. The War on Terror is not a war of self-defense, but of aggression, nationalism and fear. Therefore, it is a choice to go overseas and demolish men, women, children, houses, farms, entire cities even. I believe supporting the troops is a very evil idea, even if their job is not enviable, even if their murderous rampages does not always make them terrible people at home. It is so strange and dark how ripping children apart with machine guns does not entirely disable one to love their own children.

That leads me to my next point: Why these ribbons are magnetic. They are purposefully easy to remove so that if public opinion were to suddenly and overwhelmingly change, the drivers of gas-guzzling SUVs could avoid scrutiny. Otherwise, why don't the majority of magnet consumers opt for adhesive?

All I am doing is taking the initiative. For every ribbon I remove, that is one less bigoted, hateful, war-mongering driver you will see in traffic. Perhaps, if you see one of these magnets yourself, you would do the rest of the world a favor and remove it.

For the first time since I've been documenting these ribbons, while taking this photo I was interrupted by the car's owner, who was sitting outside her apartment. I asked her what the ribbon meant and she said she didn't know because it was her husband's. I explained that I document these magnets and she thought it was a little weird, but mostly she was just as curious. It was a pleasant encounter!

I think L.U. 20 means Local Union 20, not that I'm really sure how unions are organized here.

I imagine the faux-ribbon fad will be over soon and this faux-ribbon will soon be missing in action and, indeed, forgotten.

Sandersville, GA (Washington County). Copyright 2007 D. Nelson

Billboards like these are all over Sandersville. For a long time, a billboard next to a big Baptist Church displayed a giant "W". It is very clear what the political orientation is here...or so I thought. Ironically, Sandersville actually has been as much divided as the nation during the past elections; although Georgia is a Republican state, Sandersville voted in favor of Al Gore (Dem) in the 2000 election. In 2004, it narrowly supported George Bush.

So these messages may just be an effort by the right-wing residents to make sure Sandersville, like the rest of Georgia, stays Republican...the sign next to this one read: "There is no right or left, just right or wrong".

Fine art photographer, patriot and pet-lover, Stacey P. Morgan, www.stayMor.com, will launch a series of “PAWtriotic” greeting cards and a 2012 calendar on the 10th Anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy. The cards feature Ms. Morgan’s 10-year-old dog, Delta, photographed saluting the American Flag at various historical locations. A portion of the proceeds will benefit America’s VetDogs, www.VetDogs.org, a national non-profit that trains and partners assistance dogs to veterans with disabilities and active service members free of charge. www.2DOGstore.com will be selling the cards and calendar starting 9-11 of 2011.
