Employees supported a special Earth Month celebration with the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. Around 100 volunteers supported this important environmental organisation through either gardening with the horticulture team, or lantern making for their award-winning winter lantern trails. The activities ended with a lunch and talk from Kew Director of Science, Alex Antonelli on biodiversity.

Piedras Blancas Light Station is located at Point Piedras Blancas, about 5.5 miles west by northwest of San Simeon, California. The first-order Fresnel lens at Piedras Blancas was first illuminated on February 15, 1875. The Piedras Blancas lighthouse was originally 100 feet high to the top of the ventilator ball. Earthquakes over the years damaged the structure. On December 31, 1948, final damage from an earthquake centered 6 miles off the point led to the decision to remove the upper three floors: the fourth landing, watch room, and lantern. Missing the beautiful ornate lantern, the truncated lighthouse now stands about 70 feet tall. The lens was moved and is on display in the nearby community of Cambria. The area is a Historic Park and Wildlife Refuge.

Ahmed is a friend of mine with a serious problem. His disease is getting worst day by day and now he is significantly impaired also in simple movement like walking. Last year he has done both plain films than MRI evaluation to assess the stage of his coxarthrosis and his disease is so advanced that surgery is mandatory, as soon as possible. After several months of research we found a young researcher at Sapienza that introduced us to an outstanding surgeon with a great experience in hip surgery. Finally Ahmed found a solution for his problem but now he needs a lot of money for the surgery. He has to be treated in a private clinic because his condition is really serious and this is a one-shot surgery. In public hospital the type of prosthesis used is tailored for elderly people, but he is young and “normal” prosthesis are not good enough. Moreover he can be treated only one time because of post-surgery changes, bone shortage (due to his dwarfism) and other medical problems to technical to be discussed here, and so there is no chance for a re-intervention if something goes wrong or to replace the prosthesis in a second time when the prosthesis itself will need a replacement. He is a smart guy, kind, and involved in social activities as well as in media and learning activities. I cannot describe him in just few words, but I know him from a while and he is really a great guy and he deserves this chance to live a normal life. If you can, please help him with a coffee, a coke, a beer or whatever you want. If you cannot, please share his page trough you social world helping him reaching as many people as possible. Thanks a lot for your support! ahmedbarkhia.net/

Approximately one hundred Calgarians attended a rally on December 4th in front of the Harry Hayes Federal building, supporting the formation of a governing coalition consisting of the Liberals and NDP and supported by the Bloc Quebecois. The rally was organized on short notice and even though it was a chilly -5 celsius, it was very well attended by Calgary standards.

Earlier that day, the Governor General agreed to Prime Minister Stephen Harper's request that parliament be prorogued (suspended) until the end of January 2009, rather than have the Conservative government face imminent defeat.

A coalition government is widely regarded by those supporting the opposition parties as more favorable than holding another election only a couple months after the previous one.

With grants provided by the Australian Government and Albatross Foundation, and in partnership with the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE - Australia), IRIS will develop refraction services during 2010 & 2011 at all the eye clinics it supports in Cambodia. As well as training all clinic staff in providing people with refraction and low vision devices, the grants will establish optical workshops that can make and dispense glasses at government eye clinics IRIS supports in Kampong Cham, Pursat, Kampot and Battambang and the locally run organisation, Battambang Ophthalmic Care Centre. Eye screening camps will be staged twice a month by clinic staff to identify people who have visual impairement and need glasses or low vision devices, as well as identifying people who need surgical treatment.
