One of my dear friends is battling breast cancer right now, and so we at work have been trying to show our support and to cheer her up with her favorite things (which are the color purple and butterflies).
So, first we made her a mobile, where each person who wanted to made a butterfly, and I made the mobile and put everything together.
It was hanging in her cubicle while she went through chemo therapy, and she said it really helped through those nauseous days when she needed a bit more motivation.
Then her dog suddenly developed tumors and died, so we made her a butterfly with her dog's portrait, which went into her cubicle, as well.
Right before Lori's surgery, my supervisor had an idea, which I made into reality ^_^
I made a cocoon, with a butterfly (which my supervisor made) inside. And everyone who wanted to in the department wrote notes for our friend, which I folded and attached to the cocoon. Lori took it home to read the notes, but is not allowed to open the cocoon itself until she comes back (then the butterfly can come out).
This is the shot of everything on Lori's last day before her surgery. As I'm thinking of her, I decided to share this shot, so maybe if there is someone in your life who is going through something hard like this, it can give you an idea on cheering them up through little things like these.

Day of visit by renowned folk singer Gordon Lightfoot, whose 17 year old daughter Meredith is among the protesters. He spoke at length with the media in support of the cause. Later, he greeted my sister, who lives nearby in a group home, and shook her hand. After I saw him, I couldn't get the song, 'In the Early morning Rain' out of my mind. My late father had bought me my first album - by Gordon Lightfoot- when I was a bit younger than his Meredith, and that song was on it. It was a day of fathers and daughters, and memories...
I hear too often people saying that the protesters have made their point and now "should get a job', as if that's an easy thing to achieve. Not to mention that when you can find them, most jobs these days are underpaid, part-time positions with no future, benefits or stability. Many of those protesting are either undereducated or overqualified- and all in the same sinking boat, with the exception of crippling debts attached to the latter group. At the camp is a mix of politically motivated people who have chosen to be there, and others who evidently have no where else to go, but have found at the Occupy Camp a renewed sense of purpose, camaraderie and security- food and a safe place to sleep. They stand to lose the most when this is finally over.
People were asked to come by at 11pm that night to show solidarity as the protest had received an eviction notice and the police were expected to break up the camp. Fortunately there was an injunction and the eviction is now expected to take place at a later date- possibly on Saturday.
Most people at the camp reacted positively to the journalists taking photographs. An exception was Lightfoot's daughter, whom it appears didn't want to be identified as such, and another woman from Quebec, who was initially angry that I had been invited by a protester to photograph inside one of the tents, until she understood that I am a freelance photographer and don't work for any particular mainstream newspaper. Though at times I wish I did, as perhaps then I wouldn't be in this dismal, insecure financial situation, something which appears to be a shared concern with many of the protesters.
I just can't win. As i was leaving, I was berated once again for the act of taking photos of Occupy Toronto, but this time by a man waiting at the streetcar stop. He saw my Stop Ford button and my camera. On his way home from "working 7 days a week", he complained to me about his taxes, crowed about the ' warm, 5 bedroom house in High Park" awaiting him which his "hard-earned money had provided" (as he cast a dismissive eye towards the tent city behind him), showed me the callous hands of "a real worker" . He didn't believe that the police would consider using tear gas and tried to suggest it hadn't happened in Quebec City during the Summit protests, which I can verify as I was there. 5,000 canisters- I told him to look it up. His idiotic response was to ask if I work for Pravda (the Russian Communist party run newspaper, defunct since 1991 and now a tabloid)... hmmm... I wasn't actually aware that there was still a Cold War going on in 2011 Canada, but then again, neither is Toronto's Mayor Ford and company, who have been known to refer to some of "his" constituents as left wing, cycling Pinkos... (the people who didn't vote for him) , all of which explains the sprinkling of anti-Ford messages at the Occupy Toronto site. Here I was thinking only the suburbs had voted Ford in- but he has at least 1 supporter in High Park, who surprisingly takes public transit.

Captured from two miles away with a 70-300mm zoom set to 300mm. Exposure: 5 seconds; f8; ISO 800. In spite of use of a tripod, the strong wind produced some blurring. What appears to be smoke at the top of the image (visible in larger versions) is actually smudges from my cloning out of numerous lens flares. I also cloned out the worst noise, but a careful inspection will reveal some tiny red dots. On a later trip I shot the plant from a slightly different angle.
This is the Pilot Peak lime plant of Graymont Western. It is in Nevada, about 15 miles (23km) northwest of Wendover. Access is via Interstate 80 Nevada Exit 398. The plant is easily seen from the interstate, especially at night.
Ralph Tripod, who accompanied me and his younger brother Joe Tripod on this trip, sought stillness in the wind, while he supported my camera.

That's a very specific target of people to support.
Presumably he is a Street Fundraiser, or Chugger "Charity Mugger" (if one wants be less generous with the description). He is waiting for a bus home after a long day trying to get people to sign up to a small monthly donation via direct debit.
Just so everything is clear, I've posted this picture as this is an unusual sight and I'm slightly taken aback at how narrow the target of people they will help. No other reason.

The Albert Kennedy Trust
In 1989, 16 year old Albert Kennedy fell to his death from the top of a car park in Manchester whilst trying to escape from a group of homophobic bullies pursuing him in a car. Albert was a runaway from a children's home and was suffering depression. In his short life he had experienced rejection and abuse from society.
Silver Spring Maryland, Sunday March 6, 2022. I stood next to the Capital Beltway in the Four Corners neighborhood to photograph "The People's Convoy". Ostensibly this action was about mask and vaccine mandates but with the suspension of those the participants quickly pivoted to a bunch of other "Freedom" issues. Folks on social media were making light of this event but make no mistake, it was huge and has much broader support than you might think. There were hundreds of semi-trucks and other vehicles participating. A small group of supporters with American flags stood on the bridge above showing their support. I also saw numerous motorists who were not part of the action signaling with thumbs up and V signs. The only accident I witnessed was one truck running into the back of another. Traffic pretty much looked normal with only a few slow patches here and there.
Truck decorations included flags, stickers and banners displaying right wing political messages and symbols associated with the Tea Party, The Confederacy, the Trump 2024 campaign, fundamentalist Christianity, Blue Lives Matter and more. The most popular expressions were "Fuck Joe Biden" and "Go Brandon". I spent two years photographing the Tea Party and this crowd looks a whole lot like those folks did except their movement now includes militias. Together, they elected the previous President and they might do it again.
We all know of those who battle this disease, have died, or have survived. My own grandma had it, had a masectomy, survived for years afterward. The cancer returned in the breastbone and that was her demise. It was terrible to know how she wasted away and suffered. Encourage your loved ones to have mammograms, learn to detect lumps, and be aware that this is curable in the early stages. We all want our beloved ones to be 'in the pink' of health!
