I love this superposition of different geometrical shapes in shadow.

one of a few images with multiple exposures caused by a faulty film advance on the Kodak Retina Reflex IV with the 50mm Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar f/2.8 lens on Kodak UltraMax ISO-800 film. This one was cropped square tightly from the full-frame. Although it wasn't intentional I kind of like the ghostly feeling it produced.

"The Tours Aillaud (also known as Tours Nuages) is a group of residential buildings located in Nanterre, in the inner suburbs of Paris, France.

"Built in 1977 at the outskirts of La Défense business district, the Tours Aillaud are named after their main architect, Emile Aillaud. The housing project represents 18 towers including 1,607 apartments all together. The tallest of those are the Tours 1 and 2 with 39 floors and a height of 105 metres. The Tours 3 to 10 have 20 floors and the Tours 11 to 18 have 13 floors.

"Despite the differences in height, the towers share the same shape, consisting of the superposition of several cylinders. Their cladding is made of frescos representing clouds in the sky (in French nuages), which is the origin of their nickname."

Project title: The Pruitt-igoe strip - Creating Urban Diversity Through Stratification

Superposition of Memory

In a past photograph showing the Pruitt - Igoe project, the cluster of buildings looks like a desert island - a scattered assembly of units completely disconnected from its urban context. The concept of mere functionalism and the simplistic geometry, which often stands in the base of social housing projects such as this, sometimes results in a monotonous, alienated environment - a "non place".

This proposal suggests a way that might help creating a place which is a living urban tissue. It presents an infrastructure, partly planned, and partly intended for future development. It is a "strip" composed of two superpositioned urban layers - one is the Pruitt-Igoe site plan and the other is the 1938 plan that preceded it. The overlap of these two patterns creates a new one. The roof of the "strip" is at street level. The rest of the site is a sloping urban park that meets the strip's lower level. The two levels are "impaled" by a number of structures, intended for educational purposes related to the site's history such as a learning center, a museum/gallery, community center, architecture school etc. Other parts of the strip function as green areas creating a "living roof", and the rest remains as a quasi "spatial garden", leaving an opening to the creation of future stratification.

The strip can be seen as a modern archeological site, however, unlike an archeological site; it is in a constant process of development, where future buildings of different functions will be weaved into it, adding layers. In the end it hopes to create a diverse urban route, which might encourage the process of urban renewal of its surrounding, corresponding with St. Louis downtown area.
