Được mệnh danh là “ông tổ” của nghệ thuật “Superflat-siêu phẳng”, thuật ngữ này được Takashi Murakami giới thiệu lần đầu vào năm 2001 tại một buổi triển lãm của riêng ông. Loại nghệ thuật này bắt nguồn từ hội họa truyền thống của Nhật Bản - Anime, Takashi Murakami đã giúp xóa nhòa ranh giới giữa hội họa bình dân (low art) và cao cấp (high art).
