Arctic ground squirrels are the largest and most northern of the North American ground squirrels. Like many other arctic animals, arctic ground squirrels have unique physiological adaptations that allow them to survive during winter. Arctic ground squirrels are obligate hibernators and spend 7 to 8 months in hibernation. Researchers at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks have shown that during hibernation, arctic ground squirrels adopt the lowest body temperature ever measured in a mammal. The body temperature of hibernating squirrels drops below freezing, a condition referred to as supercooling. At intervals of two to three weeks, still in a state of sleep, hibernating squirrels shiver and shake for 12 to 15 hours to create heat that warms them back to a normal body temperature of about 98 degrees Fahrenheit. When the shivering and shaking stops, body temperature drops back to the minimal temperature. This type of hibernation is rare among mammals and scientists are still studying this unique physiological behavior.
Adults start hibernating as soon as they have enough body fat to survive the winter, often in late August when plenty of foods are still available. It is probably safer to enter hibernation early, even when foods are accessible, than to remain on the surface vulnerable to predators.

We spotted several dens that had been dug up by a grizzly bear. This guy was feeling brave because we were between him and the bears.

grape juice is supercool to 300°+ below zero, the resulting block with a dusting of sugar is chewy and yummy. Served on a metal tab to pick it up with.
OOH! OOH! These are SUPERCOOL!! Inspired by a customer's desire for the smallest, lightest way to play a great kit at a jazz gig, these sizes showed themselves to check off all the boxes! The mounted nests into the floor, they both nest into the bass. Ever the experimentalist, I decided to make two: one with 8-ply shells & 2.3mm hoops and another with 6-ply shells & 1.6mm hoops (this drumset) just to get an idea of how different/same they sound and to see how far apart they'd be on the scale. This one weighs in at 18 lbs for the three nested drums, versus 21.9 lbs for the 8-ply/2.3mm hooped version! Oh, and I worked up a couple of optional 12" snare drums that match -- a "Real" snare and a new "Unreal" one-headed snare with wires under the head (shown with this drumset). It's SHOCKING how big these drums sound! 6x10, 7x13, 8x16, 3¼x12; plied maple; satin wax.

We were on our way to the supercool (and superexpensive) new cinema in Bristol for a rare night out, when we spotted the window display in Harvey Nicks. It's really cool - they've made dinosaurs out of coathangers. I know, it doesn't sound cool but it does certainly look it, especially if you live in a geophilic household (that's not rude, by the way).
We particularly liked the way they've got the eye plates of the ichthyosaur. Nice work.
This was kind of a strange morning. I was kind of zonked due to allergies/Benadryl, and I barely remember taking the photo. But I do remember running into Annie and having a wonderful catching-up conversation with her. Annie is incredibly sweet and funny. And I'm gonna go ahead and assume she's very adventurous. She went straight from Maine to Denver, and who knows how many snowy mountains she's been climbing up and skiing down. Overall, she's a supercool person.
i like it for breakfast with a little maple syrup. this is the first time i've made the red variety, it's grain is bigger than the regular. i think this one would make a better savory side than a breakfast, but it was still yummy.
and very, very good for you. i'm deep in the midst of my pre-bikini health kick. i'm also all about the spring cleaning at the moment, so i may even take some pictures of my supercool new york city pad, which i've inhabited lo these last seven and a half years.
It's Day 31. The end of January. One month of photos so far...
Additionally, I was able to meet the lumpia deadline since January was "unofficially" nicknamed lumpia month by the supercool Plurk crew! It almost didn't happen because I must be shopping in all the wrong stores and couldn't find these delicious treats.
FYI: Lumpia is the Filipino version of the spring/egg roll which can be served as a side dish or an appetizer.

it's a bike... with a sidecar... a brightorange bike... with a mickyficky sidecar... please rewrite your definition of "supercool" to accommodate.
the worship band. i snuck a picture. i so sneaky. the bass player, mike, is really awesome. we met with him friday night at the beer garden in astoria. and everyone else was very cool.
i've decided, as far as church/denomination goes, i just want to be around people who love God and live passionately for him in their everyday life. if i agree with a church's every doctrine but they're dead in their walk and there's no joy among them, then no thanks! vineyard's submerge ministry in williamsburg is definitely not the latter.
