An old photo from the Las Vegas Air Show.

First day of June and the first day of Winter today my fine flickr friends and the temperature has dropped about 5 - 10 degrees feels like. Full moon on the rise and 10 ft surf predicated for tomorrow morning and unlike Game of Thrones - Winter is here and not coming anymore ;).

This shot taken last week on that magic surf morning - I hope I am not boring you with three shots in a row from the same morning but I blow up these shots big on Mama Retina 27 inch and my heart sings at that ocean and spray.

Just emerging from one of our busiest months at work and now the countdown has begun for Bali in 2 1/2 weeks - I swear the Universe has speeded up time this year as I feel as if time is going by faster than it ever has and Frank reminded me on the place where the square photos live (instagram) that I had not been so active on Flickr - I said very true and that my heart belonged to flickr however like to dedicate time on here to look at shots, say hello - Instagram is my juice bar and Flickr is my 3 course meal - and so much to catch up. So this is a wave out to you all and to say hi (yes, I have used that before ;)) .

In the meantime swing by Frank's place and say hello - supernice guy with supercool shots :

Back in 2020 we had this supercool #macromondays theme called #filltheframe which i really enjoyed.

And for last weeks theme we had to shoot condiments where i took again a "full frame" image. Made fun and i did some extra shots on it a couple weeks before.

Noodles also are great to put into a fullframe :)

EZnea is a play on words in Basque. "Esnea" means milk but EZ means no. Might be some sort of anti-establishment thing.

This sculpture stopped me in my tracks.

I was walking to Penn Station and spontaneously decided to cut through a pedestrian plaza between 42nd and 41st Streets when I came across this amazing piece of art.

When you are trucking along trying to make a train you can have blinders on and have a "on a mission" mentality dialed up to 11. Have you ever been in Manhattan at rush hour? Pretty much anyone who isn't a tourist is on that mission. :)

So when I came across this it made me stop, double-back a few steps and gawk at its coolness. Out came my phone and boom, I had my project to work on during my train ride home.

Snapseed is my #1 go to app for processing shots on my phone and boy oh boy did I have fun with this one.

I also researched the sculpture and found out it was created by Italian architect and designer Antonio Pio Saracino. It is actually one of two pieces that flank each end of that pedestrian plaza and is called, "The Guardians: Hero and Superhero." Pictured here is the one named "Superhero" and rightfully so.

13 feet tall, weighing 15,000 pounds and made of mirror-polished stainless steel plates stacked in repeated planes, "Superhero" reflects the architecture of the surrounding skyscrapers and suggests movement within its environment.

To me it's just plain, "Supercool."

Small tortoiseshell on a flower in the gardens of Muckross House south of the town of Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland

Some background information:

The small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) is a colourful Eurasian butterfly that belongs to the family Nymphalidae. It is found throughout temperate Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia, Siberia, China, Nepal, India, Mongolia, Korea and Japan, wherever common nettle is found, which their larvae feed on. The small tortoiseshell is the national butterfly of Denmark. It is a medium-sized butterfly that is mainly reddish orange, with black and yellow markings on the forewings as well as a ring of blue spots around the edge of the wings. It has a wingspan ranging from 4.5 to 6.2 cm.

Adults feed on nectar and may hibernate over winter. In warmer climates these butterflies may have two broods in a season. While the dorsal surface of the wings is vividly marked, the ventral surface is drab, providing camouflage. Eggs are laid on the common nettle, on which the larvae feed. As with several nymphalid butterflies, the caterpillars feed on stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) and small nettles (Urtica urens). However, common hop has also been recorded as larval food plants.

Adults overwinter in hibernation, emerging on the first warm sunny days of the year to mate and breed. In southern parts of the range there may be two broods each year, but northern insects are inhibited by the long length of summer days from breeding a second time. Small tortoiseshell butterflies usually begin to emerge from their pupa from mid-June into August. They tend to enter hibernation by mid to late September. Typically these butterflies will try to hibernate in dark sheltered locations.

Because of this hibernation, they need to accumulate a lot of fat to survive the winter. Small tortoiseshell need at least 20% of their body weight in lipids in order to survive, making them much slower. Towards the end of their foraging for hibernation, they are much more susceptible to attacks by birds because of their low muscle to body mass ratio.

In the first few weeks of hibernation, tortoiseshell butterflies are very susceptible to predator attacks. Up to 50% of the population hibernating in any given area can become the prey of birds. During their hibernation tortoiseshell butterflies are able to supercool in order to keep from freezing. In sheltered areas, these butterflies can stand up to −21 degrees Celsius without freezing. However, they experience rapid weight loss during unusually mild winters.

After hibernation, nectar is one of their main sources of nutrients. The compound eyes of small tortoiseshell butterflies enable them, to differentiate between various flowers through visual signals. They tend to prefer colours at both ends of the visible light spectrum for humans. These correspond to the colours violet and red respectively.

The wings of tortoiseshell butterflies help conceal them extremely well from predators. When closed, their wings look like leaves, helping them to hide. On the ground, it may take birds up to 30 minutes to see them. In addition to this, when discovered, tortoiseshell butterflies will flick their wings open to reveal bright colours. While they don't have eyespots like many other butterflies, these bright contrasting colours can often scare a predator, giving the tortoiseshell butterfly ample time to escape. These butterflies are also particularly fast. When discovered and attacked by birds, they usually fly away in straight lines in order to outstrip the predators.

Small tortoiseshells were once among the most common butterflies in Europe and temperate Asia. But nowadays, these butterflies are in very rapid decline, at least in Western Europe. This decline cannot be explained by the decline of their host plant, because the nettle is still widespread. However, small tortoiseshells are severely affected by summer droughts. During periods of drought, the butterfly experiences a vastly reduced reproductive rate. Another crucial factor is the timing of rainfall. If there is not adequate rainfall in the early summer, the food plants are not able to fully develop, leaving the larvae without a suitable source of nutrition. Hence, declining rainfalls and increasing summer droughts might be a reason for the decline of this butterfly species.

So I arrive back from Wendy's late Saturday afternoon and was feeling a little fluey - I had a huge shock on Saturday morning waking up to 8 degrees in the mountains after 24 degree nights here at Bronte. It seems when I turned my back on Sydney for one night autumn snuck in and took us all by surprise as the weather had turned when I got home too .

My Bronte beach photo pal - Kerry - laughs at me all the time as I often say I have a 'feeling' thats its going to be big surf or crazy skies the next day. I had 'prophesised' to him during the week that Sunday was going to be amazing - big surf and crazy skies together. So when I woke up feeling not so hot and it was drizzling with rain and all grey outside I thought so easy to fall back to sleep but I remembered my 'prophesy' and thought - get up for 5 minutes Rosie, cross the road and then come back to bed.

As soon as I crossed the road - I saw the sky out to the ocean was full of these amazing clouds and there was huge surf too. It seems that nature will take with one hand (the warmth) and give with the other (the skies and the surf). Well....2 hours later I got home - only because my battery was dead and my sd card full and I was wiped out with a cold .

Kerry was there too and got some great shots (check him on Instagram @kerryw1lson ) and I kept saying 'didn't I tell you Kerry' ..and he kept rolling his eyes to heaven . I kept then saying - you know I am going to create my own 'Weather You Should or Weather You Shouldn't Get Out Of Bed 'App. He kept rolling his eyes as he knows how many times I have been wrong too . You are only as good as your last forecast...so I'm going to ride this one for a while ;)).

There was this supercool alien ship cloud thing going on in the clouds as I am a huge Starship fan(the original series) - this is my homage to that classic show.

Iceland

The ground is quite hot in this place, and partially dried out like in the desert. Many different colours and textures on a comparably small area. The springs are surrounded by reddish brown hills and wide stony plains. I love the landscapes of this country.

Rauðavatn, Iceland. Supercool to see. Haven't seen these often and never gotten the chance to take good pictures.

The question at hand in 2008: what happens if you take a picture of an incandescent light bulb under a lampshade with a compact digital camera? This experiment constituted one of my very early attempts at digital "photography" (other than pictures of the family, etc.). Taken in February 2008 with a compact Canon A570IS, f 2.8, 1/2000 sec,, iso 100, with post-processing involving one of my very first and most epic struggles with Photoshop retouching.

I personally found it supercool to see the print on the light bulb backlit by the light in the bulb (which you could never do by looking directly at the light bulb while it is on), but I understand that you personally may not be equally excited or amused.

This is Jóhanna being silly.

This is what me and my roomate always like to joke about - both coming from the West side of Iceland, the only ones in our class. So, whenever someone says something that we disagree about (something that's different from what we say in our part of Iceland) we scream at them "WEST SIDE" and act supercool.

So, this is my serious attemp to look like some gangster.

I was putting this at my class' website and decided to go public with it ;) Hope you'll enjoy!

Thanks to my homie Hilmz from da West for loaning the parka. Peace.

_self???_

The South Bank is my favourite part of London - not least cos it's south of the river! And the National Theatre is one of my favourite buildings - a brutal beauty with urban art and skaters adorning its bowels. Anyway, here is one of the many artists who spray the shuttered conrete with their fancy scripts and tags. Mr Superdry [who was quite handsome for a young man...perv] had sprayed a really lovely silver and pink message to his love - Simone.

Liz and I were a bit tipsy and spent a while snapping the young men in their urban attire. Superdry. Supercool.

Frost patterns on glass roof.

It’s difficult to believe looking at it now but this started out as a picture of some amazing frost trails on my conservatory roof taken on Friday, suitably tweaked to make it interesting for Sliders Sunday.

Although the roof patterns are interesting the original picture is rather dull, blurred and uninspiring. I’ll link the original in-camera shot in a comment below.

The blurring is mainly caused, I think, by having to take the photo at an angle to avoid reflections shooting through the glass. But it’s triple glazed so you get the light refracted six times before it gets to the camera.

Suitable fodder then for Sliders Sunday playtime!

The frost patterns happen from time to time with this roof, I guess due in part to the self-cleaning coating. The water supercools and then the frost propagates from a seed at an edge or something on the roof along long lines spreading out from there, quite fractal-like.

A much better closeup of the frost pattern is shown in Freeze Frame II which I posted yesterday for Smile on Saturday. For this image though I wanted to show the scale of the full patterns: the glass panel is about 2.5 meters wide in this view.

As ever with these things, the journey proved more fun I suspect than the destination!

Thank you very much for taking time to look. I hope you enjoy the image! HSS

[Cropped, rotated slightly and then flipped horizontally and vertically (i.e. 180° more) to get the most pleasing flow of the pattern. Maxed the contrast slider and most other sliders in LR that helped increase the pattern. Into Affinity Photo (you could use Photoshop) for perspective adjustment to help even out the pattern size across the vertical of the shot, due to the angle of the camera (probably needs more...). Topaz Detail for heavy sharpening.

Still not terribly interesting so placed a layer underneath with a radial gradient centred bottom left, orange>purple. Soft Light blend mode on the main layer (more because it looked nice rather than I knew what I was doing!). Then added two off-white spotlights bottom-left and top-right using lighting filter, to lift those and provide some dimension. Finally added white frame with black image border and outer shadow to hint that this is displayed “art” rather than straight photo ;)

I thought later that it could have looked better with a texture added, but I haven’t really tried that before. Any advice you may have from your experience with adding textures (like how best to do it!) would be most welcome.]
