I've been sick since Wednesday night, and the first time I stepped out of my house in four days, this is what i see. Shame I couldn't ride about to photograph this magnificent sunset elsewhere...
Sunset over Addlestone 28 February 2017 - created from 8 images taken at 10 second intervals using Photoshop CC Smart Objects > Stack Mode. A Long Exposure "cheat".
A silhouetted figure witnesses the setting of the sun over the distant mountains. Hornby Island, British Columbia, Canada.
I was shooting sunset over river Thames from the Tower Bridge. The elderly couple (above) came and stood next to me. We exchanged smiles. I went back to my business. A few minutes later the lady started to feel quite poorly. When asked they assured me she was alright.
I was really moved by the way the gentleman was comforting her and couldn't resist taking a quick snap. The man himself looked quite frail and needed the aid of an walking stick. A few moments later they decided to head back....
This leads me to something which has been very close to my heart for many years now. I believe, the elderly has a very raw deal in our present day societies. It has almost become the norm to push them to Old People's Home after they have reached a certain age. Surprisingly, this trend is alarmingly gaining grounds in many traditional societies where the age old institution of extended family still relatively strong. I'm not totally against the idea of "Old Peoples Home". It can be useful in emergency and as a last resort.
Marginalisation of the elderly to the fringe of society has serious sociological/human consequences. Many youths increasingly find it very difficult to relate with the elderly and quite a few of them even foster very strange opinions about them. This would be quite a "natural" development given that children nowadays very rarely interact with the elderly on a daily basis. Then there is the sense of vulnerability and loneliness by the elderly themselves. I think we can all relate as to how painful loneliness can be. Infact, a great many are, literally, dying lonely. When we visit them at their homes they put up a brave face and bury their feelings as our societies expect everyone to be independent...even the frailed elderly ones. I have heard many a heart wrenching story from friends who have worked with elderly people.
Campaigns against cruelty towards animal has captured the imagination of nations; its about time we start a campaign for compassion towards the elderly. We could start with our own first...

Eagle Sunset
On our way home, I decided to take an alternate path. Deep in depression from learning of today's departure of the Sandhill Cranes, I saw the distant swoop of a white tail. As I looked up more carefully, I saw what I thought was a white head. OMG, right in my neighborhood! I whipped the car around and stopped as quickly as I could. And there was the beauty, surveying her surroundings.
A most happy Friday. I hope I will see Friday a lot more!
