Took this shot while on a jog along the bluffs the other evening. It is a 6 vertical image panoramic stitched in Lightroom. The cropped image is 60 megapixels.

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, San Diego, California

One of the beautiful things about long exposure photography of water is it smooths out the waves into this beautiful, misty and blue scene.

The cliffs, however, tell a different story. Their erosion is significant, and this precipice is unstable at best, but the view is astounding. The waves crashing onto the rocks and the gulls make for a calming sound, despite the destructive force.

When I moved back to the East Coast for a few years after buying a home and living in San Diego for three years, people asked if I was certain I wanted to move back here.

Sure, it's expensive, but no more than the DC suburbs were. Sure, its politics are a bit interesting, and again, living around DC was similar. But, on March 30th, when I was forced to throw on jeans and a lightweight jacket so I could endure the sunset breezes on the coast at 65°F, I thought, "yeah, maybe they were right to question me - not."

Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has many large homes.

For those of you who have visited this beautiful cliffside view that hugs the Pacific Ocean in oint Loma, San Diego California, then I don't have to tell you how amazing it is.

As I planned my trip and places to visit, i had no idea how the locals would gather here. Many couples and groups picked a spot and just watched as the day brilliantly came to an end. The wind was ear piercing, and my sister and niece left and went back to the car. I stayed and dug my heels in and watched the show.

In all honesty, I wish people here in New England did this. Most times, our beaches are empty by 5pm, and only a few souls are enjoying the last light of the day.

Sunset Cliffs in San Diego County is an exposed reef break that has quite consistent surf. Winter is the best time of year for surfing here. Works best in offshore winds from the east. Groundswells more frequent than windswells and the ideal swell angle is from the west. Reef breaks provide lefts and rights. Best around low tide. Likely to be crowded if working. Beware of urchins, rips, rocks, obstacles, locals and pollution.

Sunset Cliffs - Ocean Beach

My wife Carol relaxing and looking out at the ocean as the sun begins to burn through the morning’s marine layer.

Just as I was setting up this photo, two people walked out and setup their chairs to wait for the sunset. Normally it is pretty easy to wait for people to move, and you can take the shot without anyone in the photo... but when you see them put down chairs...? well... not so much.

I could have cloned them out, but I thought it actually looks interesting, and it does give a sense of scale to the rock.

Sea Arch located along Sunset Cliffs Point Loma Ocean Beach Boundary just off the first few parking spots along Sunset Cliffs Road as you leave Ocean Beach

If you look closely you can see someone napping on the arch

This was taken prior to the peak sunset color, but I think I actually prefer this photo because it has more color transitions and depth.

10 Stop filter was used to smooth out the water and clouds.

Rare rainy weather in southern California...

Took this a few years ago. As with much of the country it is freezing here and I have not been out since New Year's Day. Time to go through the archives. This is a beautiful place to watch the sunset. Hoping everyone is staying warm and this spell doesn't last to long.

I spent an afternoon walking around the sunset cliffs area of San Diego, enjoying the sights and taking a ton of photos. The light was pretty good for several hours, and I was able to get many good shots.

This was the peak of the sunset, featuring a large sea stack still standing in the ocean.

Happy New Year everyone! Wishing you all health and prosperity in the coming year.

Captured this one before Lars (my dog) decided to jump in off the rocks. I had to time it until a wave pushed him back towards me and I grabbed his collar to pull him back up.
