A sun dog or mock sun, formally called a parhelion is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to one or both sides of the sun. It is commonly caused by the refraction and scattering of light from plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals .

One cold day I braved the frigid air. Not the most fantastic photo of sun dogs, but I like it!

The Sun Peers through passing clouds offering a view of extreme lighting conditions within the clouds themselves.

An Alternative Filter was utilized to diminish the garish Sunlight.

Although the Sun is not at its high for sunspot activity it still does not disapoint. Sunspot group AR 2526 is rotating into view (left) while sunspot group AR 2524 is rotating out of view. Photo taken from my house deck in Columbia, Maryland with a 155mm refractor, a Thousand Oaks Solar Filter and a Nikon D810 camera at prime focus.

This trip to Canada was lucky all the way. We got all of the shots we planned for and also got some by accident. Meeting Sun Halo in Banff National Park was one of them. It last more than 30 minutes and we could drive to the lake side to get the ideal composition.

heaven sun and water

....on a hazy summer morning.

We hiked up the steep, muddy, slippery Westburg Trail through thick fog. Near the top of the ridge, the sun began showing it's face. There is nothing quite like the first glimpse of sun through fog!
