A shot of the summit again. I liked the dramatic sky, gives the climbers a far more impressive, conquering appearance :)

The second bi-annual Farmers Summit brought together growers, entrepreneurs and local food enthusiasts from around Southeast Alaska together to exchange resources, insight, best practices and collaborate about localizing our food system. The weekend event was held in Haines, Alaska and was made possible in partnership between the Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition, Takshanuk Watershed Council and the Sustainable Southeast Partnership. The event was sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture, Coppa, Alaska Glacier Seafoods Inc. and Alaskan Brewing Co.

The southeastern side of Summit Peak is skirted by a large flat grassy area sporting a few small lakes and a segment of the continental divide trail. This is a shot looking SE from part way up the southeast face of Summit Peak. It's hard to tell in this shot, but I'm actually climbing up a 30° slope and am quite a ways above the flat grassy area behind me. Since the ground flattens out behind me and there are no cues for the change in angle, it all looks flat.

The logs and timbers are in pretty good shape.

For this photo journal, it was my goal to try to capture the best pictures during Summit Week on and off of campus. With all of the art around campus, it made it very difficult to walk anywhere without seeing something related to the Summit, making anything you see a great picture! My goal for this project was to take pictures of the art around campus, rather than action-shots during the workshops and key notes. For the art around campus, I wanted to bring out the yellows and oranges, with deep contrast with the dark oranges and grays. For the pictures off of campus, I also wanted to bring out the yellows and oranges, but it was very important to me to show the contrast of sustainability. Some areas have cleaner air than others and I wanted to show that in this journal. In two of the pictures, there is a haze in the background, showcasing the poor air around downtown. The other two pictures, are on a golf course when the sky is clear and highly visible. After seeing the complete difference of the two air qualities, it makes me want to shift my ecological footprint and make sure that everyone has clean air to breathe in the future!
