Summit Lake (12,830 feet) is an excellent example of a high alpine lake. It lies in a cirque formed by Mount Evans and Mount Spalding with rocky ridges and cliffs rising from the lake to the summits over 1,000 feet above. It is the most accessible lake above timberline as the Summit Lake parking area is just a few hundred feet from the lake. The area to the east of the lake is Summit Lake Flats and is the only known area of permafrost located in the United States outside of Alaska.

The Toledo Patch has crossed the Oregon Coast Range at Summit, Oregon and will now descend into the Willamette Valley towards Corvallis. The ragtag lashup on this train includes an ex-Santa Fe GP39-2 leading a chopped-hood GP38-2 and two GP40s sandwiching an ex-NS slug.
A little bit of history about the Toledo District: the line started out as the Oregon Pacific Railroad in 1885 running between Corvallis and Yaquina Bay. The line was envisioned as a railroad between Boise, Idaho and the Pacific coast via Santiam Pass, and early in its history, it caught the interests of Chicago and Northwestern officials looking to expand westward towards the Pacific. Nonetheless, the Oregon Pacific's investors ran out of money and the railroad entered bankruptcy in 1890 with the connection to Boise never completed. The SP ultimately bought the line in 1907. Today, the line's sole customer is the Georgia-Pacific mill in Toledo, served by the Portland and Western's Toledo Patch/Hauler trains.
