A selection of photos from a trip to Torridon in the North West Highlands of Scotland in early Spring 2023.
Being my first visit to this area, I needed to explore so I parked up at Loch Maree and set off following a promising looking path.
While watching college football today, I game-planned on my laptop about a good evening photography location. There's supposed to be a much-needed storm rolling through the area, but I was surprised to see that all but one of the notable locations within an hour's drive of Reno were clear and sunny according to weather.com. Donner Lake was the only place that was listed as partly cloudy, so I went there. Upon arrival, the view of the lake was, in my opinion, rather stale and boring; no clouds at all were over the lake. But I did one of the best things that a photographer should always do while making images in the American West: turn around to see what's facing the other way. I noticed some cool looking clouds over the Donner Summit Bridge, and there was some nice light on a nearby mountaintop. Thankfully, there was a decent little trail that helped me get to a decent angle. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a cool shot of Donner Lake with some snow soon. We badly need it out here.

It is here that the Denver & Rio Grande Western's Tennessee Pass Route from Pueblo to Dotsero crests the summit near the headwaters of the Arkansas River. Twenty-two years without a train and counting. Slowly yet surely nature reclaims the railroad and people take claim their pieces of the famed Tennessee Pass.

On top of the world....always a favorite spot to visit when we're in the Tetons; great for sunrise or sunset with views of the Teton range in one direction and the Teton valley in the other. Enjoyed the company of a blue grouse on this particular evening as well as an interesting storm front brewing in the distance. Mike was scoping while I was photographing, one of his favorite things to do when we're out west; and I couldn't resist a shot of my favorite model :-) He told me he's going to start charging a modeling fee....LOL!!!!
Have a great Thursday, and as always, thanks for visiting and commenting!!!!
View from the summit of Grigna Meridionale (2177m) looking west over Lake Como. Trying this in mono because I love the contrast of the foreground, but also because the summer haze took a lot of colour out of the sky anyway.
A little explaination for my not italian speaking friends... ;-))))
The statue represents Giotto, the famous Florence painter; in italian you can read "G8" as "GI-OTTO" (and not "g-eight" or worst "Greater Eight"!!!!).
Then, having only my 55-200 that evening, and being the Vicchio place small, I could shoot only the higher parts of the statue and the church; the Summit, in effect... :-)))))))))
The colours are real, not photoshopped. There was a feast in the town and various coloured spots lightened the statues and the buildings.
Uhm....finish to talk, Firenzesca?
Finish.
End of the Summit.

Another old photo re-processed: the summit of the Cotopaxi volcano in Equador, photographed using a Fujicon 55mm f/1.8 legacy lens and Olympus PEN E-PL1 camera.
The original RAW photo was grainy, underexposed, slightly blurry and just plain flat; yet I still thought it had some nice potential. So at first I tried real hard to extract the original scene as naturally as possible, but the result was disappointing. Then I tried all kinds of monochrome edits, but that too just didn't work for me. And then, as I was about to throw the towel, I accidentally stubled upon the OnOne "Blue Dawn" preset, and with some additional tweaking in Lightroom, Topaz DeNoise and Nik's Viveza this is the result.
Getting the basics right in the first place sure would have saved me a lot of time, but I think I wouldn't have obtained this Bob Ross scene if I had. :-)
