People began piling stones on this high point along the Northern Peaks Trail years ago. The igloo-shaped mound is now over 6 feet tall. More recently, people have been raising small cairns atop the mound.
i have finally started to explore some of the iconic West Australian landscapes and during a recent visit to the South West region i spent a little bit of time at the Sugarloaf Rock near Cape Naturaliste...
a cloudy day allowed me to shoot a long exposure and i was looking to capture the detail of the rock, as well as, to let some of the colours in the water come through the choppy sea...
thank you for your continuous support during 2014 and for your comments and visits... this will be the last post for this year and i wish you all a very happy and safe Festive Season and all the best for the New Year...
see you in 2015!

I drove down from Perth to Busselton today. After checking in to my accommodation for the next two days I headed out to check out Sugarloaf Rock for sunset. This was my first time to this location, I got there early to have a bit of a scout around, the sky was looking promising for a colourful sunset early on, but then the clouds closed in. There wasn't much colour, but I think the overcast sky suited the location just as well.
An aerial view of the craggy coastline and Sugarloaf Rock off the Chasms, near Port St Mary, Isle of Man. The area is popular with bird life and Stonechat, Chough, Raven, Kittiwake, Guillemot and Wheatear may be seen here.

Sugarloaf Rock, South Western Australia
I put some effort into taking some different Sugarloaf Rock compositions when I was down there and came away with this. The sea was quite calm and allowed me to get quite close down to the edge without getting wet.

This is a repost of a photo I took earlier this year. Today, in Sydney, we had some spectacular weather and it brought me back to this day in Western Australia. Crisp, dry, warm... perfect!!!
This is Sugarloaf Rock. It can be found along the rugged Western Australian coast a few kilometres south of Cape Naturaliste in the Margaret River Region. A truly magical coastline that I cannot wait to get back to one day.
The Sugarloaf, named for its resemblance to a mass of hard refined sugar, is the best known feature in the Hallett Cove Conservation Park. The 'red beds' are sand and clay that contain dropstones. The regular layering indicates that the clay was deposited in calm water.
White sand forms the main portion of the Sugarloaf.
At the base of the Sugarloaf is a layer of clay and boulders that fell from ice floating across the lake. The Sugarloaf is capped by a thin 'young' layer of brown alluvial clay which was deposited by a river between one to two million years ago.
Its shape is due to erosion by rain and wind over the last few thousand years. However the layes tell a much longer story:
Around 280 million years ago southern Australia (inlcuding Hallett Cove) was covered by an ice cap. It melted about 270 million years ago. The distince red and white layers of sediment were deposited on the bottom of an ancient glacial meltwater lake.
Our Western Australia trip away with ray Jennings has been fun packed - Mozzies / Saturated and awesome locations.. Here is one of my shots from yesterday..

Sick of Brazil photos yet? View of Botafogo bay, with Corcovado and the Christ statue under clouds at dusk, from the Sugarloaf mountain. These photos had so much potential, but because of bad weather, with fog and clouds obscuring the view every few seconds, it was not possible to do longer exposures than a few seconds, plus the old camera with a soiled sensor needed a lot of cleaning up, thus less than ideal sharpness and image quality, I'll try again next time I go to Rio.
Sugarloaf Point lighthouse in summer, 2016. The lighthouse, which is small and charming, with an external staircase, was the first designed by James Barnet (1827-1904), who was the NSW Colonial Architect of the time. It was completed in 1875.

From my Hawaii trip in March 2023.
This was the first really awe inspiring landscape I encountered when I started driving around the somewhat dangerous one lane highway 340 around the northwest part of the island.
My first thought was "Morro Rock's twin Hawaiian sister."
The summit is 636 feet tall, and was purported to be King Kahekili's favorite cliff diving spot.
(German: Zuckerhut) Originally, it was built in the Middle Ages between 1500 and 1510. During World War II, in March 1945, the building was completely destroyed by incendiary bombs.
From 2000 on a private association dedicated to the embellishment of the city, started collecting funds to reconstruct the Upended Sugarloaf. The reconstruction started in 2009 and the building was inaugurated in 2010. The Upended Sugarloaf is now used as a café.
We were lucky enough to walk past the iconic Sugarloaf Rock today. Part of the Cape to Cape track in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.
