The witness sees suffering for what it is, without denying it, twisting it into a story of endurance, or giving it a happy ending. The witness has a profound and rare human capacity to give reverent attention to sufferers and reflect their truth back to them. And in the encounter with those who suffer, the witness undergoes conversion from numbed or removed observer to passionate advocate.

In Lamentations the narrator sees and hears the magnitude of Zion's suffering. He does not deny it, reduce it to a nicer version of itself, or blanket it with theological platitudes. Instead, he reflects back to her the pain she can barely articulate. And somehow, his ability to admit her reality into his consciousness changes him; his encounter with her “turns his spirit” (cf. 1: 16b). He grasps the truth about her situation and affirms that her suffering overwhelms him as well.

-Lamentations and the Tears of the World, Kathleen M. O’Connor

We are really suffering with the heat here in the south of England. Temperatures in the 30's which for us, who live our lives without aircon, is so draining. The poor cats are all feeling it and are desperate to find cool spots around the house and in the garden which come the afternoon is nigh on impossible. Temperatures at night are in the 20's so not much sleep being had. I have a rechargeable handheld fan, which can also sit on your desk: an excellent buy from John Lewis I was sitting in my armchair this morning and Kaiser, as usual, came and sat on the arm of the chair. I wondered what would happen if I put the fan on him. I put it on the lowest setting and put it near his back and there seemed a positive reaction, so I put it in front of him and as you can see, he closed his eyes and enjoyed the cool air.

I just cannot believe that this is still continuing and that NOTHING is being done about it. All children belong to HUMANITY and should be covered by human rights!!!

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

After suffering through a warm, sunny day with bright blue, clear skies and a temperature of 71 degrees today, (perfect for laying out at the pool), the sky decided to treat the desert with this flash of brilliance for a finishing touch! Merry Christmas to ALL and all a good night!

Now is the winter of my discontent! Made possibly glorious summer-like highs back up in the mid 60’s next week.

I've been suffering from back-related sciatica lately. No fun. I haven't been out for a week now and was going stir crazy. So I went to see the eagles with my camera and my chair. Here's a shot of a bald eagle who had been on a snag and now decided to return to the nest. They really are beautiful in flight, aren't they?

Thanks for visiting and for your faves and comments.

If you'd like to see more of my eagle images, go to schockenphotography.com. I have many images of eagles and other raptors as well as owls, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, songbirds and mammals and I have a full section on birds in flight which is my specialty.

After suffering a multi-year drought, the rains returned in earnest to the Central Coast of California, turning our hills green.

These are the secrets of happiness as I see them:

:

- Believe in God.

- Be satisfied of the things you have.

- Never think of the things you don't have.

- Believe that everyone is suffering of something. You are not the only one who suffers. It is true that you may suffer more than some. But it is also true that there are some who suffer more than you. Be content.

La Piedad is a 1952 sculpture by Juan de Ávalos y Taborda located at the entrance to the Basilica of the Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos, located in the Cuelgamuros valley. The statue, in addition to presiding over access to the crypt, serves as the penultimate station of the Via Crucis that runs through the valley area.

The sculpture measures approximately six meters high, nine meters wide and three meters deep. Weighing between one hundred and twenty and one hundred and fifty tons, the sculpture, dark in color due to the stone that covers it, shows Christ in the arms of the Virgin, whose serene face reveals great suffering and sadness for the death of his son. The Virgin clings to the lifeless hand of the dead Christ and supports her head, which falls back along with her hair, resting part of her body on the ground. Particularly noteworthy are the torso and right arm of Christ, whose pose is markedly naturalistic and detailed with regard to human anatomy, contrasting in turn with the folds of the Virgin's tunic and veil.

I am glad Mareea said yes when I asked her to exhibit at Nitroglobus and challenged her to show another side of herself, meaning out of her comfort zone i.e. her beautiful landscape images. She choose claustrophobia as the theme for her exhibition.

Mareea also 'dressed' the gallery, which she did in her own impeccable way.

The poster was made by David Silence and is based on one of the images of this exhibtion.

*****

Mareea's description of the exhibtion:

A form of anxiety, disorder; claustrophobia is defined as an irrational fear of small, confined spaces. The feeling of being trapped, with no way to escape, can lead to panic attacks. Approximately 10% of the population is affected by this mental disorder.

Why I have chosen claustrophobia as theme for this exhibition? Because we live, these days, in a confined, pandemic universe of our own, and we are all more or less “claustrophobic”, even without suffering from this disorder in our normal, healthy lives.

This exhibition is my metaphoric way to express those feelings, trying to rationalize them, in order to make them endurable.

It takes strength and courage to face a painful ordeal

Il faut de la force et du courage pour affronter une épreuve douloureuse

I heard on the news this morning that the Catholic church may not allow a Catholic burial for those who decide to end their life through assisted dying if this new bill gets accepted. I thought we were trying alleviate suffering in the world.....for all people. They did clarify that each person's case would be judged individually. This is where you hope the church will act with compassion.

“There is the solitude of suffering, when you go through darkness that is lonely, intense, and terrible. Words become powerless to express your pain; what others hear from your words is so distant and different from what you are actually suffering.” -John O'Donohue

So on my day off, I had it all planned I wanted to take these photos, but this flu bug had other plans. Me being the stubborn person I am wasn't going to have it. So through the fever and nausea I got my shot!

"The photo is the hunt. It’s the instinct of hunting without the desire to kill. It’s the hunt of angels… you track, you aim, you fire and-click! Instead of a dead man, you make him eternal." - Chris Marker

“ "Sport" hunting is a sickness, a perversion and a danger and should be recognised as such.

People who get their 'amusement' from hunting and killing defenceless animals can only be suffering from a mental disorder.

In a world with boundless opportunities for amusement, it's detestable that anyone would choose to get thrills from killing others who ask for nothing from life but the chance to remain alive. ” Sir Roger Moore
