The History of Yosemite Valley Chapel

" Of the structures in public use in Yosemite National Park, the Yosemite Valley Chapel is now the oldest. This little New England style church was built under the sponsorship of the California State Sunday School Association, partly by subscriptions from the children, but mainly from the voluntary contributions of prominent members of the Association.

The Chapel was built in 1879 under the auspices of the Yosemite Union Chapel Association. Their stated purpose was: "To erect an undenominational house of worship in the Yosemite Valley". They took their inspiration from two Old Testament scripture verses:

Haggai 1:8: "Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD."

Isaiah 2:2: "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it."

Mr. Charles Geddes, a leading architect of San Francisco, made and presented the plans. Mr. E. Thomson, also of San Francisco, erected the building at a cost of between three and four thousand dollars. It will seat an audience of about two hundred and fifty. Mr. H. D. Bacon of Oakland donated the bell. When its first notes rang out on the evening of dedication, it was the first sound of "the church-going bell" ever heard in Yosemite. ["In the Heart of the Sierras" by James M. Hutchings (1888)]

The first service was held on June 7, 1879, and the church was filled to overflowing by delegates to the National Sunday School Assembly who were meeting in Yosemite Valley at that time.

The first organ in the Chapel was given by Miss Mary Porter of Philadelphia in memory of Florence Hutchings. Florence was the unofficial, but faithful caretaker of the Chapel during the summer of 1879-1881. She died in a climbing accident at the tender age of 17.

In 1887, on the death of President Grant, a memorial service was held in the Chapel. The organist for the day was Sir Arthur Sullivan, famed composer and collaborator with Sir William Gilbert in the famous Gilbert and Sullivan light operas. Sir Arthur was visiting in the Valley at the time and was asked to assist in the service.

The original location of the Chapel structure was on rising ground near the base of the Four Mile trail, a mile or so down the Valley from its present site on the south side of Yosemite Valley.

In the passage of years, the old Chapel, built in the midst of a busy community, lost one by one its companion buildings, until, with the moving on of community activity to other parts of the Valley, it stood alone. In 1901, it was taken down and moved to its present site.

The Yosemite Valley Chapel was given Historic American building status by the National Park Service in 1965. Following this, its interior was restored and a new foundation was placed under it.

Although the Chapel continues today primarily as a house of worship, over the years it has become a popular wedding destination due to the spectacular setting and the quaint beauty of the building. The first Chapel wedding took place on October 24, 1884."

Hagerstown, Indiana (September 10, 2012) The new Model T Ford Museum is slated to hold its grand opening during Richmond’s Octoberfest on September 28 at 6 p.m. The museum which was previously located in Centerville, Indiana near the Warm Glow Candle Factory for 5 years moved just a few miles east to Richmond, Indiana’s Historical Depot District this past spring.

Since the move to Richmond volunteers have been steadily preparing the museum’s new home, displays and vehicles for the event.

Today, a photo shoot for the Model T Museum’s newly acquired 1930 Pietenpol Sky Scout was held at the Hagerstown Airport.

The plan arrived at the airport around 10:00 a.m. this morning and was assembled by Model T enthusiasts and many of them brought their own Model Ts to use during the photo shoot.

One of the people there today was Mr. Jay Klehfoth who is the CEO and publisher of the Vintage Ford Magazine.

Jay is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to all things Model T. I was to learn he’s pretty knowledgeable in a lot of areas too. During our walk around of the plane Jay pointed out one of the parts for the engine had been made by a former factory in Richmond of all places. And there are many other special things about this airplane I’m sure he’ll be writing about in the next issue of the the Vintage Ford Magazine. He not only knew a lot about the Pietenpol Sky Scout plane that was being photographed for the magazine cover. He’s pretty sharp when it comes to airports too. He said that the Hagerstown airport were today’s photo shoot was done has the longest grass landing strip in the United States which to me made it the perfect place for today’s event.

This Pietenpol that will be on display at the museum is powered by a 20 HP Model T engine which was modified to include dual-ignition which is used in aviation. According to an article in the AntiqueAirfield.com website from September 10, 2012 there was only one original Pietenpol Sky Scout built by Bernard Pietenpol himself, and just two replicas. The article also said that all 3 were still flying.

The new Model T Ford Museum is going to be an exciting addition to what is one of Indiana’s grandest historical areas and a must in this part of the Midwest.

Richmond is a perfect place for any day trip. But, if you want to see all that Richmond has to offer you’ll need to plan on staying several days.

The Model T Ford Museum is located in Richmond’s Historic Depot District at 309 N 8th St, Richmond, IN 47374 - 765-488-0026.

Dolly sales went well, less than I thought had to go for disasters :). Christmas bonus and payday tomorrow. With the bing cashback and the ebay cashback stuff, she was bumped down into the price range I was hoping to keep under. (though my poor Goldie fund got depleted by $75 because the stupid New Yorker mag subscription people just TOOK the renewal out of my card with out asking--I bought the subscription online so I could control that, it's Carters traditional birthday gift, argh--and last night we had a power outage and so we ended up having to go out to dinner or sit in the cold and dark, bleagh). But with all the extra hours last week, I can still swing this.

She'll TOTALLY need a hair spa when she gets here, but she's mines, mines, MINES!!!!

Gotta run and go to work, will make more happy typing later! Meanwhile, anyone have any suggestions a) for names! and b) how to get her hair back into Goldie-ness (it hasn't been cut)?

:) :) :)

Graduation is the next big step towards achieving your goal. On the 24th of November, 2013 Visual College of Art and Design grads experienced it all. Check out some of the pictures and let us know what you think because your opinion is very important to us.

Here is what one of the 3D Modeling Animation Art and Design program students says about VCAD: âThe instructors helped me develop a workflow that could apply to a professional environment, by telling me how to approach any project I come across, and why certain methods work better than others for different situations. It was reinforced that there is more than one way to do things; there is only the best way to approach things as variables in work are always different. Having the instructor show how to do things step-by-step using the class projector was extremely helpful. My overall experience on campus has been good. The instructors and support staff were all very helpful.â

Historic Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia

Education and religion developed as the population of the county and town grew. During the pioneer settlement period youngsters were-often taught at home or at a neighbors. The population was widely scattered and organized schools were-not possible. Subscription schools were the next level in education. The school was open to anyone who could pay the tuition. Generally, the teacher of a subscription school traveled to and boarded with the child's family and taught only the basics. Dr. Squire Bosworth was one of the early subscription school teachers. Thomas Jefferson proposed a free school system in 1796 but apparently it was never put into operation. The public school system was again proposed in 1810 when the Literary Fund was created. This was paid for through fines, penalties, etc. paid to the state. The Literary Fund remained in effect until the Civil War.

I'm a sucker for a good subscription service...

Updated figures from the Ericsson Mobility Report Interim Update, August 2013

I see a lot of people saying that in order for companies to break even after Apple's new in-app purchase / subscription policy (where Apple gets 30% of the cost), these companies should just raise their prices by 30%.

To say that betrays a basic misunderstanding of math. Check out this chart.

In order for a company to break even and make the same amount of money they are today, they need to increase their prices by ~43%!

I received a (holiday) renewal notice from WIRED magazine today. That got me thinkin' a bit about why I even subscribe in the first place. It also led me to take a look at the pile of magazines I have sitting here and their wonderfully colorful bindings.

About

The Hare and the Minotaur Statue in Cheltenham can be found on The Promenade, outside House of Fraser. It is a truly remarkable statue, and although not everyone loves it, it is worth a stop on your visit to Cheltenham.

The sculpture was initially part of a temporary exhibition of the work of Gloucestershire based artist Sophie Ryder; it featured at the Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery and it was created in 1995. The overwhelming public response to the exhibition fuelled the campaign to retain one of Sophie Ryder’s sculptures and the Hare and Minotaur was acquired by public subscription in 1998.

The statue itself features a female hare and a male Minotaur seated on an oversized bench. The statue itself stands taller than any person and is made of reclaimed scrap metal; up close you can spot cogs and cooker hobs, screws and all sorts, creating a really textured, tactile metal finish. At the end of 2017, the statue was removed for a month and taken for restoration at Sophie’s Foundry, where it was returned to its former glory before taking up its place on the Promenade once more. Sophie worked in partnership with Cheltenham Public Art Panel to organise and finance the restoration, after the statue’s presence on the Prom for almost twenty years!
