Everett King Edward VII Sailors' Rest building stands looking out across the Corio foreshore, and is in the very heart of Geelong. The King Edward VII Sailors' Rest was an evangelical temperance organisation designed to provide welfare services to sailors; to attempt to divert them away from alcohol and other temptations of the town and to encourage them to return to or continue to practice Christianity. In order to attract more sailors to the 'Rest' an electric bulb sign was installed in 1926. The animated sign operated with flashing letters and words and was intended to be very noticeable from Yarra and Cunningham piers as the sailors disembarked. The sign was built by the nearby Melbourne Electric Supply Company and donated to the Sailors' Rest by Howard Hitchcock, former mayor of Geelong and Chairman of the Sailors' Rest Committee. The sign is understood to have ceased operation from the 1950s until 1997 when it again operated but without animation.

The style was known for its self confidence and expressed the growing prosperity of society. The King Edward VII Sailors' Rest building facade features a parapet concealing a roof, contrasting materials with varying textures and a prominent corner tower, all of which are characteristics of the Federation Free Classical style of architecture.
Percy Edgar Everett (1888 - 1967) was born in Geelong. He was appointed chief architect of the Victorian Public Works Department in 1934 and he is best known for the striking Modernist and Art Deco schools, hospitals, court houses, office buildings and technical colleges the department produced during his tenure. A shocking murder was committed on the body of a female on Friday se'nnight, in the parish of Wendy, a little after 10 o'clock, which was discovered in a most singular manner.
About a year ago, a man named Thomas Weems was married to the deceased at the parish church of Goldington, in Bedfordshire; but it being a match of compulsion by the parish officers, she having
previously sworn a child to him, he left her immediately after the completion of the ceremony, and returned to his place, leaving her to go home to her friends, which she did, and it afterwards turned out that she was not in a state of pregnancy. On Monday the 3rd of May instant, he left Edmonton, where he had got a situation, for the purpose of going to Godmanchester, where his wife resided, whom he had never lived with, to prevail on her to go and live with him at Edmonton.
On his road from Caxton towards Godmanchester, he fell in with a return chaise and got into it to ride to Godmanchester, and there was a man in the chaise known to Weems. In the course of conversation, Weems stated to the man, that he was going to Godmanchester to get his wife to go and live with him at Edmonton; but that there was a girl at Edmonton he was acquainted with, a very nice girl, whom he liked much better than his wife, and should much like to marry her. On the man saying that was impossible, he being a married man, Weems replied, that "when he had got his wife at Edmonton, he should soon be able to get rid of her.'' Weems remained with his wife at Godmanchester till Friday, when they both left that place early in the morning to walk to Edmonton.
They walked from Godmanchester to the spot where the murder was committed, being about 16 miles, without resting. When they arrived at the fatal spot, they stopped; the woman being tired, laid herself down on the grass by the road side, about a mile from Arlington. While they were resting here, a woman named Susannah Bird, of Wendy, who was going to Royston, saw the deceased sitting on the ground on the right hand side, near Mr. Russell's fields, and Weems was on the other side, opposite his wife. Directly after she had passed, she saw both Weems and his wife go lo Russell's field; they stood looking about, and appeared as if they were noticing her, and she kept looking back at them. When she got to lord Hardwicke's white gates, she lost sight of them all at once, and then kept on her way to Royston. As she was returning from Royston, she met the same man near Royston with a bundle, whom she had before observed. She asked him what he had done with the young woman he had with him in the morning? He said, “I left her behind; she is about spun up. I cannot get her any further, so I left her to get on by the coach”.
Susannah Bird then came on, met the coach, and looked for the young woman, but could not see her outside or inside. She says something struck her that the man (Weems) had done something wrong to the woman, that he had killed her; she went on, and saw a person hoeing in Mr. Wilkinson's field, to whom she told the circumstances, and said to him that "she would go to the next field (being the place where she saw them in the morning), and see if she could discover what betided the young woman.''
She passed through the gate where she saw Weems and his wife go in, and immediately discovered the young woman lying in the ditch, her face nearly flat to the ground, her shawl over her face, and her bonnet on the shawl: her body was covered all over with grass, which was strewed over her by hands full; only a foot and one of her fingers could be seen; there were marks on the grass by the ditch, as if there had been great struggling and rolling about, and there was the trace of a man's foot from the place where the grass was tumbled about, to the spot where the body lay. She called to the man in Mr. Wilkinson's field; he came; they removed the grass, and on examining the body, her garter was found round her neck tied very tight; she had the fellow garter on her left leg; she was quite dead, and black in the face.
Pursuit was immediately made after the supposed murderer, who was apprehended in a waggon. Information of the body being found was sent to the coroner for the county; he arrived at eight o'clock in the evening, and he had scarcely finished swearing the jury before a chaise arrived, in which was Weems.
The jury sat till between one and two o'clock on Saturday morning, and, after taking a body of evidence, they returned a verdict of Wilful Murder against Thomas Weems, the husband of the deceased, who was committed upon the coroner's warrant to the county gaol to take his trial at the next assizes. We understand the prisoner has made a full confession, and described the means by which he perpetrated the horrid deed.

A public notice to raise money to replace an existing wooden bridge over the "Alne" river, with a new stone structure (named later as the "Duchess' Bridge").
Note how this subscription (for £650 to build a bridge !!) was started in January, leading to the entire bridge being constructed and opened in the very same year !!!
By the 1850s, local parish schools in Armadale were at capacity and struggling to serve the needs of the local community after an influx of miners to the local area significantly increased the population.
The community decided to raise funds to provide their own school for Armadale. A subscription lists was sent around the community, including to local businesses. Subscribers included the Earl of Roseberry and the Monkland and Iron Steel Company. This deed box was used to keep the school's important documents including the subscription lists and other historic documents.

We have been constantly working amongst commercial sex workers (c.s.w.s), for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (S.T.I.) holding seminars, lectures and direct contact programmes with these groups and also interacting with young people to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS.
R.K. HIV/AIDS & Research Care Centre always working for poor slum dwelling people of Mumbai for their general medical needs by organising for the last three years in these camps we provide free diagnosis, investigations including free medication for welfare of poor and weaker section of our society.

One of the largest crowds seen in Myponga assembled at the hall when the remodernised building was opened by Mr Connor, MP who was supported by Messrs Halliday and Bagot MLCs.
The hall itself was built on land originally acquired by the South Australian Company in 1841 and subsequently purchased from that company by Mr C W Eatts, the present secretary of the hall.
After the opening, visitors inspected the buildings, which now contain up-to-date cloakrooms, dressing rooms, a spacious stage, attached supper room, modern kitchen, and bio box. The kitchen contains stove, copper, flyproof cupboards, drainboard and sink. The hall itself has been refurnished throughout.
Dinner and tea were served by a committee of ladies. In the evening the enlarged hall proved inadequate for the crowed, which came from Adelaide, Victor Harbor, Goolwa, Willunga, McLaren Vale and Yankalilla for the opening ball. [Ref: Advertiser 22-9-1938]

The Subscription Schoolhouse was moved to this location in Beverly in 1993, it was originally located on the Bell’s Farm, near Becky’s Creek in Randolph County. The school was built in the 1870s and was originally called the Haddan Mill Run School. This subscription schoolhouse is the last of its kind in Randolph County and possibly the last in West Virginia.

The Leeds Rifles were raised in 1859 when the Volunteer Force was formed to meet an invasion threat from France. The Corps was titled 7th Yorkshire, West Riding, (Leeds) Ri...fle Volunteer Corps. Many prominent Leeds businesses raised complete companies from their workforces, including Joshua Tetley's brewery. The Tetley family played a central part in the Leeds Rifles for well over a century providing a number of officers, commanding officers and honorary colonels. The Leeds Rifles at first had their barracks next to the Town Hall where the Law Courts stand today. As "Rifle Volunteers" the Corps received little War Office funding and their accommodation, uniform, arms and equipment were largely funded through subscriptions. The unit grew quickly, soon reaching 1,000 and, as well as producing an elite volunteer infantry unit, played a central part in the social life of the city.
Edward Cardwell's reorganisation of the army in the 1880's required The Leeds Rifles to become a "Volunteer Battalion" of The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment). The Leeds Rifles, by now a flourishing unit, stoutly declined the War Office offer to join another regiment. The dispute lasted several years, resulting in The Leeds Rifles retaining their distinctive Rifle Green uniform and regimental accoutrements, and not being required to bear the colours of The West Yorkshire Regiment, despite, in 1887, becoming the 3rd Volunteer Battalion The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) (Leeds Rifles). By this time the unit had become so large that it had bought and modernised, with Corps funds, the old militia barracks at Carlton Hill, and so Carlton Barracks became the home of The Leeds Rifles.
On the outbreak of the Boer War the Leeds Rifles formed two Volunteer Active service Companies whose active service resulted in the award of the Leeds Rifles' first battle honour, "South Africa 1900-1902". A memorial to those who died on active service is in Leeds Parish Church.
When the Volunteer Force became the Territorial Force, in 1908, the unit expanded to form two battalions, each over 1,000 strong, the 7th and 8th (Leeds Rifles) Battalions The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) (TF). In July 1914 both battalions returned early from camp with orders to embody for war. So many former Leeds Riflemen and new recruits turned up at Carlton Barracks that two second line battalions were formed. The original battalions were identified as 1/7th and 1/8th; the second line as the 2/7th and 2 /8th. The first line battalions served in France and Flanders from April 1915 continuously to the end of the war as part of the all-territorial 49th (1st West Riding) Infantry Division. A large part of their active service found them enduring the misery of holding the infamous Ypres Salient as well as the Battle of the Somme, Passchendaele and the final advance to victory.
The second line battalions served with the all-territorial 62nd (2nd West Riding) Infantry Division which went on active service in January 1917 when it established a deserved reputation as as assault division. In the fighting to recapture the Marne, the 8th Battalion was decorated with the French Croix de Guerre for its gallantry in capturing Bligny Ridge. From that time all members of the Leeds Rifles wore the ribbon of the Croix de Guerre on their uniform. Some 2,050 members of the Leeds Rifles died on active service in France and Flanders, 1915-1918.
Both Leeds Rifles Battalions reformed in 1920 when the Territorial Army was reconstituted. War Office funding was poor throughout the 1920's and early 30's but a hard core of dedicated Leeds Riflemen kept both battalions flourishing. In the late 30's, the 8th Battalion was converted to the anti-aircraft role as the 66th (Leeds Rifles) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA (TA), mobilised for the Munich Crisis, later seeing active service in Britain and the Far East. The 7th Battalion became a tank unit which itself expanded to form two regiments: 45th (Leeds Rifles) Royal Tank Regiment (TA) and 51st (Leeds Rifles) Royal Tank Regiment (TA). The 45th fought with distinction during the break-in phase at El Alamein, but was subsequently disbanded to provide battle replacement crews, having suffered high casualties. The 51st also served in North Africa. Later, during the battle for the Adolf Hitler Line in Italy, the 51st supported the Canadian Division who subsequently decorated the unit with the emblem of the Canadian Maple Leaf which is, to this day, worn as part of Regimental dress.
The Leeds Rifles anti-aircraft and tank regiments reformed after the war and served in those roles until 1961 when they again became infantry and were amalgamated to become The Leeds Rifles The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire (TA).
In 1967 a new Volunteer Regiment, Yorkshire Volunteers, was formed. The Territorial battalions of the four Yorkshire Infantry regiments each became a Company of this new Regiment. The Leeds Rifles (apart from the Band, which became the Yorkshire Volunteers Band) became an AVR III unit, unpaid and largely unwanted. Once again, they did not "fade away" when asked, but stuck it out. Two years later, having once again "declined" to accept the wishes of those in Whitehall, The Leeds Rifles became "E" (The Leeds Rifles) Company at Leeds. The remaining cadre of soldiers subsequently became the nucleus of "C" (The Leeds Rifles) Company , 2nd Battalion, was formed in Castleford in 1971. Successive reorganisations witnessed Yorkshire Volunteers expanding to form four battalions. The Leeds Rifles companies variously changed their company letter to meet these changes, but always retained their "Leeds Rifles" title as well as wearing the Croix de Guerre and the Maple Leaf.
Further reorganisation of the Yorkshire Volunteers in 1993 found The Leeds Rifles serving as a Company of 3rd Battalion The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire.
One of the consequences of the Strategic Defence Review of 1998 was that from early 1999, The Leeds Rifles were reduced to a platoon of Imphal Company, the East and West Riding Regiment. The name and traditions will be proudly preserved for many years to come.See More
