Stuttgart is the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. The sixth-largest city in Germany, Stuttgart has a population of 613,392 while the greater Stuttgart Metropolitan Region has a population of 5.3 million, being the fourth-biggest in Germany after the Rhine-Ruhr area, Berlin/Brandenburg and Frankfurt/Rhine-Main. The city lies at the center of a densely populated area, surrounded by a ring of smaller towns. This area called Stuttgart Region has a population of 2.7 million. Stuttgart's urban area has a population of roughly 1.8 million, making it Germany's seventh largest.
Stuttgart is spread across a variety of hills (many of them vineyards), valleys and parks – unusual for a German city and often a source of surprise to visitors who primarily associate the city with its industrial reputation as the "Cradle of the Automobile." Stuttgart has the status of Stadtkreis, a type of self-administrating urban county. It is also the seat of the state legislature, the regional parliament, the local council and the Protestant State Church in Württemberg as well as one of the two co-seats of the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart.

Nachdem Brigitte Herm-Binder das Pelzgeschäft im Zentrum Stuttgarts im Herbst 2011 geschlossen hatte, lud sie für den Abend des 2. Mai 2012 eine geschlossene Gesellschaft zum Sektempfang, um auf die Eröffnung des neuen „Fur-Style“ anzustoßen. Knapp 30 Aktivist_innen fanden sich um 17 Uhr in der Calwer Straße ein, um die Vorbereitungen der Feierlichkeiten mit Sprechchören zu stören. Mit Plakaten, Transparenten und Infomaterialien, die das wirkliche Leben und Sterben von sogenannten Pelztieren zeigten, machten sie Passant_innen auf die Machenschaften des Geschäfts aufmerksam. Die Polizei nahm zur Kenntnis, dass die Demonstrant_innen seitens der Ladeninhaber_innen wiederholt photographiert, gefilmt und beschimpft wurden. Die sehr positiven Reaktionen der Passant_innen glichen die Beleidigungen und abschätzigen Bemerkungen der Betreiber des Ladens und der Gäste jedoch um ein Vielfaches aus. Zum offiziellen Beginn der Geschäftseröffnung um 19 Uhr erreichte die Lautstärke der Sprechchöre ihren Höhepunkt – jeder Gast wurde mit Buhrufen, Pfiffen und Sprüchen empfangen. Die Atmosphäre im Geschäftsraum schien von der Anwesenheit der Demonstrant_innen deutlich gestört zu sein. Zum Ende der sehr gelungenen Gegenveranstaltung um 20 Uhr war klar, dass dies nicht die letzte Demonstration in der Calwer Straße war: Für die Freiheit, für das Leben – Pelze aus dem Kaufhaus fegen!
