Stuttgart's most charming palace must surely be Schloss Solitude, which was commissioned by Duke Carl Eugen in 1763. It was intended to be a place 'far from the turmoil and disappointments of the world'. Its architect was Philippe de la Guepiere, who was a pioneer of the Louis XVI style in Germany. A straight road runs for 12 km from here to the Residenzschloss in Ludwigsburg. This photograph shows the interior of the Weisse Saal (White Hall).
